HP uses the Caps Lock LED to blink fault codes on Pavilion, EliteBook, and ProBook laptops that won’t display anything. Three blinks = system board fault. Five blinks = also a system board fault. Four blinks followed by a Num-Lock blink = embedded controller (EC) fault — the small co-processor that manages keyboard, battery, and power-rail sequencing. Counting these blinks correctly is step one before any board is touched.
Most HP laptops shipped from 2015 onwards carry a hidden BIOS recovery partition in firmware. To trigger it: power off completely, hold Win + B, then press and hold the power button for a few seconds. The fan is inspected for blade-bearing wear; we replace it only if the RPM reading under load drops below spec, avoiding unnecessary cost.
