Tell us what your MacBook charger is doing

MacBook charging problems break down differently from Windows laptops. The MagSafe LED, USB-C PD handshake, and Apple’s strict voltage tolerances each have their own failure modes.

MagSafe LED won’t light

Cable attaches magnetically but no green / amber light. Pin-side debris, charger fault, or MacBook female-side issue.

Charges only at certain angles

USB-C cable needs to be held at angle. Fractured cable near the connector — replace cable or full charger.

Frayed cable near MagSafe

Insulation worn at the bend point. Replace before short-circuit. MagSafe 3 cable is detachable on Pro 14/16.

Charger brick gets very hot

Capacitors aging inside the brick. Replace before it fails completely or damages the MacBook’s USB-C PD controller.

Charging much slower than usual

USB-C PD negotiating at lower wattage. Charger output degrading or wrong-tier charger plugged in.

“Not charging” in menu bar

macOS sees charger but won’t draw current. Charger output bad, or MacBook’s USB-C PD chip needs attention.

Audible hum / whine from brick

Failing capacitor inside the charger. Audible sign of imminent failure — replace soon.

USB-C connector loose / damaged

Connector damaged after fall or insertion stress. Charger or MacBook port both possible — we test both.

What’s really happening inside

Why MacBook charging is fundamentally different from Windows-laptop charging

MacBook chargers since 2016 use USB-C Power Delivery (PD) — a digital handshake protocol where the charger and MacBook negotiate voltage and current before any real power flows. The MacBook says “I need 20V at 4.7A,” the charger says “I can deliver that,” and only then does power begin to flow. This is dramatically more sophisticated than the older barrel-jack charging in Windows laptops, where 19V is just always present at the connector. The trade-off: more failure points, higher quality requirements for the charger, and stricter voltage tolerances.

Apple Silicon (M1 from 2020 through M4 in 2025) tightened the spec further. The MacBook’s USB-C PD controller chip, paired with the Secure Enclave on the M-series chip, performs continuous integrity checks on the incoming voltage. If the charger’s output drifts outside Apple’s acceptable curve — even by a few hundred millivolts — the MacBook reduces charging speed or refuses to charge entirely. This is why cheap third-party USB-C chargers often work fine on Windows laptops but charge MacBooks slowly or refuse to charge them at all under load.

A non-certified ₹600 USB-C charger can damage the MacBook’s USB-C PD controller chip. Replacing that chip is ₹4,000-₹7,000 of board-level work. The ₹600 you saved on the charger costs ₹4,000+ in board repair. We sell genuine Apple chargers for this exact reason.

The MagSafe story is its own evolution. The original MagSafe (2006–2017) was a magnetic connector unique to Macs, designed so the cable would safely detach if someone tripped over it. Apple killed it in 2016 in favour of USB-C, then brought it back as MagSafe 3 in late 2021 on the M1 Pro / Max MacBook Pro 14 and 16. MagSafe 3 is mechanically magnetic at the laptop end but uses a USB-C connector at the charger end — meaning the cable is detachable and replaceable separately. This is a small detail with practical consequences: a frayed MagSafe 3 cable is ₹1,800–₹2,500 to replace just the cable, not the whole charger.

Wattage matching matters even more on MacBook than Windows. A 30W charger is fine for MacBook Air (M1, M2, M3, M4) under normal use but will charge slowly under heavy load (Final Cut export, Xcode build). A 67W charger handles MacBook Pro 13 fine. 96W is the right tier for MacBook Pro 14 and the lower-tier Pro 16. 140W with MagSafe 3 is needed for MacBook Pro 16 with M2 Max / M3 Max / M4 Max chips at full load (otherwise charging slows during heavy use). We confirm the exact tier from your model number before delivering.

Before we sell a charger, we test the existing one with a USB-C PD analyser to confirm whether it’s genuinely faulty, then test the MacBook’s USB-C ports themselves — sometimes the port has debris or a damaged pin, and a new charger won’t fix the underlying issue. Honest diagnosis before sale.
