Storage drives come in two fundamentally different flavours. A hard disk drive (HDD) is a mechanical device: spinning platters of magnetic material with a read-write head hovering nanometres above the surface, moving radially to seek different files. Typical seek time is 5–15 milliseconds, which sounds fast until you remember the CPU operates in nanoseconds — six orders of magnitude faster. A solid-state drive (SSD) has no moving parts. It’s an array of NAND flash memory chips controlled by a processor that reads and writes electrically. Typical access time is 0.05–0.1 milliseconds — about 100× faster than HDD.
The practical effect is dramatic. Windows boot drops from 60–90 seconds on HDD to 8–15 seconds on a SATA SSD, and 5–8 seconds on a fast NVMe SSD.
