Most random shutdowns cases fall into one of these eight patterns. We’ve seen each one many times — there’s a fix for every single case.

Shuts off after 20-30 mins of use

Thermal protection cutting in. Aged thermal paste, clogged fan vents, or fan bearing failure.

Sudden shutdown at 40-60% battery

Battery percentage looks fine, then dies. Voltage sag — cell can’t deliver peak amps under load.

Crashes only during gaming / video

Idles fine, dies under GPU load. RTX/GeForce thermal-throttle followed by emergency shutdown.

BSOD, then shutdown, then reboot

Blue screen flashes, laptop reboots into Windows, repeats. RAM, driver, or kernel error.

Only stays on when plugged in

Battery EOL or charging-circuit failure. Battery can’t hold charge for >2 minutes alone.

Loud fan noise just before shutdown

CPU/GPU at 95°C+, fan at full speed, then thermal cut. Repaste + clean restores 25°C cooler operation.

Shutdown right after BIOS post

Powers on, shows logo, dies before Windows. Failing storage drive, RAM, or motherboard power section.

Shutdown loop at startup

Powers on, dies in 10 seconds, repeats indefinitely. Short circuit on motherboard or swollen battery contact.

What’s really happening inside

Why laptops shut down randomly — the 5 root causes

A random shutdown is the laptop’s self-protection system kicking in. Modern CPUs (Intel 12-14th gen, AMD Ryzen 5/7, Apple M1-M5) have a thermal-junction limit of 100°C; the laptop will throttle at 95°C and emergency-shut at 100°C to prevent silicon damage. Other shutdown triggers are battery voltage sag (cell can’t deliver demanded current), RAM error (kernel panic), storage-drive lockup (boot drive stops responding), and motherboard power-IC failure (regulators can’t hold the rails). Each leaves a different fingerprint — the trick is reading it correctly in 10 minutes of diagnosis.

The most common “laptop shutting down randomly” visit in 2025-2026 is thermal. Hyderabad summer heat (40°C+ ambient) plus 3-4 years of aged thermal paste between the CPU/GPU die and the heatsink turns a normally cool laptop into a shutdown machine. The fix is repaste + ultrasonic-clean of the heatsink fins + dust removal from the fan blades. Drops temperatures 25-30°C on most laptops. ₹999–₹3,500 depending on whether the fan also needs replacement. Full overheating service.

In our 2025-2026 random-shutdown log, 54% are thermal, 22% are battery, 14% are software (BSOD/driver), and 10% are motherboard power-circuit. Each gets a different fix — we test before quoting parts.

Battery-side shutdowns happen when the cell can no longer deliver peak current under sudden CPU load. The percentage indicator looks fine (it shows charge state, not voltage capacity), but the moment a video call or game spikes the CPU, the cell’s voltage sags below the laptop’s minimum operating threshold and the system cuts. We confirm with a battery report and a 5-minute load test. Battery replacement with a fresh OEM cell restores stable operation. ₹2,000–₹14,500 depending on model. Battery service.

For software-side shutdowns (BSOD, kernel panic (macOS's equivalent of a Windows blue screen — the operating system has crashed and must restart), then reboot), we read the Windows event log and crash dump to identify the offending driver, RAM module, or system file. RAM errors run memtest86 to confirm; driver issues get a clean reinstall; kernel issues sometimes need a Windows repair install (data preserved). Software-only fixes are typically free with the ₹149 visit charge if no parts are needed. Motherboard-level shutdowns (rare) need workshop time for chip-level diagnosis — we quote separately after diagnosis.

If diagnosis points to multiple root causes (e.g., aged battery + dirty fan), we’ll quote the bundle so you don’t pay two visit charges. We never replace parts that aren’t the actual cause — the test log goes into our service report so you can verify.

How it works

Four steps from broken to working

Most random shutdowns cases complete in under 90 minutes at your doorstep. You watch every step.

01

Diagnostic logs + thermal test

Read Windows event log, run battery report, monitor CPU temps under load. ₹149 visit charge.

02

Fixed quote per fault

Exact root cause, exact path to fix, exact price. Multiple-cause cases get bundled pricing.

03

30–90 min repair

Repaste, fan-clean, battery swap, driver fix, or workshop-side board work as needed.

04

Test & pay

Stress test under typical workload — video call, gaming, browser tabs — verifies no shutdowns. 30-day warranty.

Laptop Random Shutdown Repair — FAQ

Everything customers ask before booking a random shutdowns repair in Hyderabad.

Related services

Other repairs that often go with random shutdowns

Random shutdowns are usually a thermal or power-rail symptom — these are the underlying repairs we book in the same visit.

Overheating Repair

The #1 cause of random shutdowns. Thermal protection trips at 100°C — fan + paste re-do drops temps 15-25°C and the shutdowns stop.

Cooling Fan Replacement

Bearing-fatigued fan can’t move enough air. Replacement + Arctic-class thermal paste restores headroom.

Battery Replacement

Voltage sag from a tired battery cell can shut the laptop off at 30-50% under load. New cell module fixes the sudden-off behaviour.

Motherboard Repair

If thermal isn’t the cause, a failing power-rail capacitor or PMIC chip can shut the system. Chip-level board diagnosis isolates it.

Charger / AC Adapter

An under-rated or worn charger can’t sustain the laptop under heavy load — the laptop falls back to battery and shuts off. Genuine OEM charger fixes it.

Hanging / Freezing

If shutdowns alternate with freezes, the cause is often shared (thermal or RAM/SSD). Combined diagnosis at the same visit.
