Hanging and freezing have an outsized reputation as “mysterious” problems — the kind authorised service centres love to quote ₹15,000 for. The truth is duller. Modern laptops freeze for one of seven reasons, and the symptoms tell us which one almost before we open the case. Roughly 60% of the “my laptop is hanging” calls we get in Hyderabad turn out to be software-only fixes — under ₹1,500, finished the same visit. The remaining 40% need a ₹2,500–₹8,500 hardware intervention (RAM, SSD, thermal, board-level), but you’ll know which before we touch a screw, because we diagnose first and quote second.
The single most common cause we find in 2024–2026 vintage Indian laptops is a failing SSD or hard disk. Mechanical hard drives have an honest 5–7 year life, and the last 6 months of that life looks exactly like a hanging laptop — random freezes during disk reads, slow file copies, click-then-wait-15-seconds. SSDs hide their decline better but eventually drop write speeds to a crawl when their reserve cells deplete. We run CrystalDiskInfo on Windows and Disk Utility S.M.A.R.T. on macOS in the first 5 minutes of every diagnosis. If the disk shows reallocated sectors or a TBW (terabytes-written) past spec, swap it — nothing else will help. SSD swap with full data migration is ₹3,500–₹8,500 depending on capacity.
Second-most-common is RAM exhaustion. A 4 GB Windows 11 laptop in 2026 cannot run a modern Chrome tab session and Microsoft Teams without paging to disk constantly — and paging on a slow disk freezes everything. Even 8 GB struggles for power users. We check RAM usage at idle and under your normal workload; if you’re hitting 90%+ regularly, an upgrade transforms the experience. Most laptops support 16 or 32 GB; M-series MacBook is the exception (RAM is soldered, no upgrade possible — we’ll tell you straight if a trade-up is the smarter move).
Third on the list, especially in summer, is thermal throttling. After 18–24 months, dried thermal paste lets CPU temperatures climb to 95°C; the chip then halves its clock speed to protect itself, and you experience that as freeze-pause-freeze patterns during heavy work.
