The eight most common keyboard faults we fix every week. Almost every one is recoverable.
You press, nothing happens. Could be one key (mechanical) or several rows (cable / connector / membrane).
Coffee, tea, juice. Some keys stick down or are slow to return. Needs cleaning or full keyboard replacement.
A keycap popped off or broke. Often a clean re-seat, sometimes the scissor mechanism beneath needs repair.
Keys work but backlight is dead. Backlight cable, controller, or LEDs need diagnosis or replacement.
One press registers as “aaaaa”. Membrane fault — full keyboard replacement.
Press “A”, get “Q”. Crossed traces inside the keyboard layer. Replacement only fix.
M1/M2/M3/M4 Air or Pro — dead key, stuck key, trackpad gone, or liquid spill. Magic Keyboard top-case replacement.
No keys respond at all. Connector, ribbon cable, or controller IC failure. Replacement at your doorstep.
A laptop keyboard is a deceptively complex sandwich. Above the deck you see plastic keycaps. Beneath each cap sits a small mechanical action — a scissor mechanism on virtually every modern laptop today (including all current MacBook Air and Pro models, Surface, XPS, and most Windows ultrabooks), or a rubber-dome on entry-level / older boards. Beneath the mechanism is a thin membrane: three printed plastic layers carrying conductive traces. Press a key, the top trace meets the bottom trace through a hole in the middle layer, and a circuit closes. The keyboard’s controller IC reads which circuit closed and tells the motherboard which key you pressed.
This sandwich is why a single dead key often requires a full keyboard replacement. The traces are printed in long horizontal and vertical lines, shared across multiple keys. If a spilled drop of coffee oxidises a single trace junction, every key that shares that row or column may behave erratically — or your “A” key might register as “Q” because the wrong trace is being read. There’s no economical way to repair a printed membrane; the fix is a new keyboard panel.
The MacBook keyboard story has changed dramatically. Apple’s troubled butterfly mechanism (2016–2019 MacBook Pros) was retired with the late-2019 16-inch MacBook Pro and the M1 MacBook Air in 2020. Every current MacBook — M1, M2, M3, and M4 Air and Pro — uses the reliable Magic Keyboard scissor mechanism. The mechanical issue is solved. What hasn’t changed is Apple’s top-case integration: the keyboard is bonded into the chassis along with the trackpad, battery, and speakers. When even one key fails, the entire top-case is the replacement unit. We service the M-series line through our Apple-grade distributor channel; we still see legacy 2016–2019 butterfly Pros for the same top-case repair, just less often each year.
Backlit keyboards add another layer — literally. A separate transparent film carries LED-driven light to each key, with its own ribbon cable to the motherboard’s backlight controller. If your backlight has stopped working but the keys still work, it’s usually the cable or the controller, not the keyboard panel — a far cheaper fix than full replacement. If both backlight and keys have failed together, replacement is the right call. On Magic Keyboard MacBooks, the backlight is integrated into the top-case and isn’t separately replaceable.
If a single keycap has popped off cleanly and the scissor mechanism beneath is intact, we re-fit it for ₹300–₹600. If the mechanism beneath is broken or the membrane is damaged, the honest answer is full keyboard replacement. We diagnose for free and show you the actual fault under microscope so you understand why the quote says what it says.

What customers ask before booking a keyboard replacement in Hyderabad.
Keyboard failures rarely happen in a vacuum — liquid, physical damage, or chassis stress usually affects nearby components that need attention at the same visit.
A tea or water spill that wrecked the keyboard has almost certainly reached the motherboard below — liquid damage treatment is done before the new keyboard goes in.
On integrated-keyboard designs the keyboard is bonded to the palmrest — a cracked palmrest and the keyboard are replaced together as a single assembly.
The touchpad sits directly below the keyboard ribbon cable connector — the same spill or chassis damage that broke the keyboard often affects the touchpad.
A broken hinge puts torsional stress on the chassis, which can warp the keyboard tray and cause keys to pop off or register incorrectly.
On many laptops the power button is integrated into the keyboard assembly — a keyboard replacement often resolves a sticky or unresponsive power key at the same time.
If the laptop was dropped and both the keyboard and screen are damaged, bundling both repairs saves a second call-out and reduces total cost.
