Tell us what your touchpad is doing

Eight touchpad failure patterns. Pattern + driver state tells us if it’s software, cable, or hardware.

Completely unresponsive

No cursor movement at all. Disabled in settings, driver gone, ribbon unseated, or controller dead.

Cursor jumps randomly

Pointer moves on its own while typing. Palm-check off, electrical noise, or surface damaged.

Click not registering

Move works, click doesn’t. Tactile switch beneath the surface failed — mechanism replacement.

Cracked surface

Visible crack on the touchpad glass / plastic. Internal capacitive layer often damaged too.

Gestures stopped

Two-finger scroll, pinch zoom, three-finger swipe dead. Precision driver missing or generic driver loaded.

Touchpad detects but nothing moves

Windows sees the device but no input. Controller IC fault on motherboard.

MacBook Force Touch dead

No haptic click, no Force Touch gesture. Trackpad module or taptic engine failure.

Failed after liquid spill

Worked before, dead after coffee/water. Internal traces shorted — replacement.

What’s really happening inside

Why “dead touchpad” is software in half the cases we see

A modern laptop touchpad is a layered capacitive sensor under a plastic or glass surface, with a tactile click mechanism (or a haptic motor on premium models) underneath. Your finger creates a tiny change in capacitance as it moves; the touchpad’s controller IC reads the change at hundreds of Hz, calculates X/Y coordinates and pressure, and sends them to the laptop’s motherboard via a thin ribbon cable. Windows or macOS picks up the data, applies palm-rejection logic, and moves the cursor or interprets gestures.

This whole stack has many failure points but only a few are common. The most common in the last three years has been missing precision driver — a Windows update replaces the OEM Synaptics / Elan / Cirque precision driver with a generic one, gestures stop, scroll inverts, and the user assumes hardware failure. Reinstalling the manufacturer’s precision driver fixes it — we do this in the ₹149 visit at no extra charge if it turns out to be the cause. The second most common is the function-key disable toggle — Fn+F5 (or similar, varies by manufacturer) toggles the touchpad off, and the user accidentally pressed it. The third is a ribbon cable unseated after the laptop has been opened for an unrelated repair (battery swap, fan clean) and not properly re-clicked.

Roughly 1 in 2 “dead touchpad” visits we do turn out to be a free fix — toggle, driver, or ribbon reseat. We tell you upfront before any chargeable work, so you don’t pay for a replacement you don’t need.

Genuine hardware failures fall into three buckets. Surface or capacitive layer damage — a crack, deep scratch, or liquid penetration that’s shorted the capacitive grid — requires touchpad replacement (₹1,500–₹3,500 standard, more for haptic / premium). Click mechanism failure on older laptops where the physical tactile switch beneath the touchpad surface has worn out (50,000+ click cycles). Controller IC failure on the motherboard — rare, but a chip-level repair when it does happen.

MacBook trackpads are a separate category. Apple’s Force Touch trackpad uses no physical click mechanism — instead, a haptic taptic engine simulates a click sensation when you press the surface. The trackpad senses pressure through strain gauges, the system decides if it’s a click, and the taptic engine fires to give you tactile feedback. When this fails on M1/M2/M3/M4 MacBooks, the trackpad is integrated with the top-case (along with keyboard, battery, speakers) and the fix is full top-case replacement — ₹6,000–₹12,000 depending on model. We do this through our Apple-grade distributor channel.

Before quoting hardware replacement, we always check the toggle, the driver, and the ribbon cable. If those test clean and the touchpad still doesn’t work, then it’s a hardware fix — and we tell you exactly what level (cable, surface, or controller) before charging.

Related services

Other repairs that often go with touchpad repair

Touchpad repairs pair with these related services. Diagnosing the right combination saves a return visit.

Touchpad Not Working

If the touchpad shows zero response in Device Manager, that's a different fault — fully dead touchpad needs separate diagnosis.

Keyboard Replacement

Touchpad and keyboard ribbons connect through the same FPC connector on most chassis. Both serviced together.

Motherboard Repair

I2C bus or PS/2 controller faults on the board cause "ghost-clicks" or scroll-stuck behaviour. Chip-level fix.

Body / Base Replacement

Dent on the palmrest stresses the touchpad. Body / palmrest replacement realigns the surface.

Liquid Damage Repair

A spill that wicked under the touchpad surface blows the tape-bonded controller. Liquid clean + touchpad swap.

Hinge Repair

Convertible 2-in-1 hinge cables can include touchpad signal. Hinge fault occasionally manifests as touchpad fault.
