Component-level fix, 1-3 days · Saves ₹15,000+ vs swap quote
Chip-level repair means replacing the actual faulty IC, capacitor, or MOSFET — not the entire ₹15,000+ motherboard. About 70% of board failures we see are chip-level fixable for ₹4,000–₹10,000. BGA rework, microsoldering, schematic-driven diagnosis. Workshop-grade equipment, free pickup & drop.
Eight motherboard symptoms where chip-level repair almost always beats a board swap.
Charging IC or main power MOSFET shorted. Single-chip fix.
GPU BGA cracked or display-circuit IC dead. BGA rework or chip swap.
Voltage regulator failing, capacitor degraded, or EC corruption. Chip-level diagnosis.
Corrosion eating traces. Ultrasonic clean + targeted IC replacement.
Visible cap swelling. Replace before they short and damage other chips.
Specific controller IC failure. Single-chip replacement, ₹4,000-₹6,500.
Thermal-runaway component — usually a single failed MOSFET or VRM.
Charging IC or input MOSFET took the hit. ~50% recovery on surge cases.
A laptop motherboard is a six-to-twelve layer fibreglass and copper sandwich populated with hundreds of components. When one of them fails — a charging IC, a power-section MOSFET, a capacitor on a critical voltage rail, an EC chip with corrupted firmware — the rest of the board is typically perfectly fine. The CPU works. The RAM works. The storage controller works. Only one component has failed, but its failure cascades into the laptop appearing dead, displayless, or unstable.
Authorised service centres are structured around a different model. They use swap-and-bill workflow: identify which board is faulty, send it back to the manufacturer for refurbishment, install a new board from inventory, charge the customer the cost of the new board (₹15,000-₹30,000+). Their technicians don’t do chip-level work because the equipment isn’t in the shop and the time investment per repair doesn’t fit the productivity model. The result: a laptop with one failed ₹50 capacitor gets a ₹20,000 quote.
Our process starts with schematic-driven diagnosis. We obtain the board’s schematic (a circuit diagram showing every component and its connections), verify the input voltages with a multimeter, then trace power rails downstream until we find the first rail that’s missing or shorted. A thermal camera is invaluable here: shorted components heat up within seconds of power being applied, glowing brightly under thermal imaging. Once we’ve identified the faulty component, we de-solder it under microscope using a hot-air station, install a fresh OEM-spec replacement (we keep common ICs — charging chips, EC controllers, surface-mount MOSFETs — in stocked drawers), and reflow the joints.
BGA-style chips (the chipset, GPU, sometimes the EC) require a different technique. BGA rework involves heating the chip from above with a precision hot-air nozzle until the solder balls under the chip melt — one wrong-temperature pass damages neighbouring components or the board itself. We use a programmable rework station with a thermal profile per chip. For chips that have failed completely (rather than just having a cracked solder joint), we replace them with new BGA components and reball them with fresh solder spheres. This is delicate, time-consuming work; one BGA replacement is typically 8-12 hours of bench time.
The 30% we can’t fix at chip level get an honest answer. Major shorts across multiple critical rails, BGA chips beyond economic re-balling, or discontinued models where component sourcing isn’t viable — we say so, recommend a full board swap if available, or hand back a written “not economically repairable” assessment for insurance / replacement decisions. We don’t do speculative chip-level on a board that’s clearly past saving.

What customers ask before sending a board to us for chip-level diagnosis.
Chip-level repair often follows or precedes one of these related services. We sequence the work to save you another visit.
Full motherboard repair scope — BGA reflow, power-IC swap, GPU caps, SIO. Chip-level is a subset of board work.
Most non-power-related board faults trace back to a past liquid spill. Ultrasonic clean before any chip-level repair.
A drop or impact can fracture solder joints or crack the BGA. Physical damage assessed before chip work.
No-display with the board powering on is usually GPU, eDP, or panel. Chip-level fixes the GPU/eDP path.
Repeated 95°C+ excursions damage solder over time. Overheating repair often precedes chip-level work.
If the board is dead but the SSD is intact, we recover files before any chargeable chip-level repair begins.
