Lithium-ion cells — the type in every modern laptop battery — degrade through three mechanisms: cycle aging (each charge from 0 to 100% counts as one cycle, with 1,000 typically the rated life), calendar aging (cells slowly lose capacity even when sitting on a shelf, ~3% per year), and cycle-temperature stress (charging in 40°C+ Hyderabad summer heat accelerates capacity loss by 2-3x). After 800 cycles or 4 years, you’ll typically see runtime drop to 50-60% of original. By 1,000 cycles or 5 years, it’s often 30-40%. The cells aren’t broken — they’ve simply reached end-of-life.
The most misunderstood part of battery health is the battery management chip (a small IC inside the battery pack that tracks cycles, voltage, temperature, and reports to the laptop).
