Press the power button and nothing happens?

Free diagnosis at your doorstep · Most fixed in 1-3 days

Before you assume the worst — or accept an authorised centre’s ₹15,000+ “motherboard” quote — let us diagnose. About 70% of dead laptops we see have a single chip-level fault that costs ₹4,000–₹8,000 to fix. Your data is recoverable either way. ₹149 visit, No Fix — No Fee.

Tell us exactly what happens when you press the power button

The pattern of zero-response, partial-response, or one-second-flash tells us where the fault is. Eight scenarios we see weekly.

Completely dead, no LED

Charger plugged in, nothing lights up anywhere. Power-section short, EC chip dead, or charger not delivering.

Charger LED on, laptop dead

Charger working, laptop not accepting. Charging IC or DC jack failure on the motherboard.

Powers on briefly, then shuts off

1-2 second flash of power, then black. Voltage regulator failing or short circuit triggering protection.

Fan spins, no display, shuts off

Brief fan noise, no boot. CPU power-rail issue or BIOS corruption preventing POST completion.

Only works on charger

Battery completely dead or charging-circuit cut off. Battery + charging IC test before quoting.

Failed after liquid spill

Worked, then stopped after coffee/water. Corrosion on power-section components — act fast.

Failed after power outage

Surge or under-voltage event killed the charging IC or main MOSFET. Usually chip-level fixable.

Stopped after BIOS update

Update interrupted or corrupted. EC firmware re-flash, sometimes BIOS chip swap. Recoverable.

What’s really happening inside

Why a dead laptop is almost always one chip away from working again

When you press the power button, a precisely choreographed sequence has to complete in roughly 200 milliseconds. The button signals the embedded controller (EC) — a tiny dedicated chip that’s always alive when the laptop has any power source. The EC checks for valid input voltage, then commands the main power-section MOSFETs to enable a chain of voltage rails: 19V down to 5V, 5V down to 3.3V, 3.3V down to 1.8V, 1.05V, and so on for the CPU, RAM, GPU, and display. Each rail must come up in the correct order. If any rail fails to reach its target voltage within a fixed window, the EC aborts the boot and the laptop appears dead.

This is why “dead” rarely means “dead motherboard.” Almost every no-power case traces to a single component in this sequence: the charging IC (won’t accept input from the charger), the EC chip (firmware corrupted or chip damaged), a MOSFET in the power section (shorted, killing one of the voltage rails), or a capacitor on a critical rail (failed open or short). The rest of the motherboard — CPU, RAM, GPU, storage controller — is typically perfectly fine. Replacing the single faulty component restores the boot sequence and the laptop comes back to life.

The honest answer to “is my laptop dead?” is almost always no. About 70% are chip-level fixes for ₹4,000–₹8,000. The other 30% need a board swap or are genuine write-offs. The ₹149 diagnosis tells you which side you’re on.

The diagnosis itself is methodical. We first verify your charger output with a multimeter (sometimes the customer has been told the laptop is dead when actually the charger is). Then we apply known-good power and probe the main voltage rails on the motherboard with a meter or thermal camera, looking for the first rail that’s missing or shorted. A shorted rail glows warm under thermal imaging within seconds — that’s usually the failed component. A missing rail traces back through the power-on sequence to the chip that should have enabled it. Either way, we identify the faulty component, not just the symptom.

Liquid damage and surge damage are the two cases that most reward this discipline. After a coffee spill, corrosion typically affects only the components nearest the entry point — usually the keyboard’s membrane and the underlying power-section ICs. After a power surge, the charging IC and the main input MOSFET are the usual casualties. In both cases, ultrasonic cleaning + targeted component replacement restores the board. We’ve recovered laptops that authorised centres declared total losses, often for under ₹8,000.

~70%Of dead laptops fixable at chip level
200 msThe boot sequence that must complete for a laptop to power on
100%Of cases where data is recoverable, regardless of repair outcome

Your data is independent of the power circuitry. Even on a board we can’t recover, we remove the storage drive, place it in a USB enclosure, and hand you back your files within 24 hours. The ₹149 diagnosis includes this. You won’t lose your work, regardless of whether the laptop itself is salvageable.

Laptop not powering on — FAQ

What customers ask before booking diagnosis for a dead laptop in Hyderabad.

Related services

Other repairs that often go with "not powering on"

A laptop that won't turn on can fail at the charger, board, button, or display. These are the related repairs we run during diagnosis.

Charger / AC Adapter Replacement

First test — is the brick supplying voltage? Genuine OEM charger replacement if the brick is dead.

DC Jack Repair

Charger good but laptop dead? DC jack might be starving the SIO chip of standby voltage.

Power Button Repair

Power button itself might be the fault. Button + SIO chip pathway tested before deeper repair.

Motherboard Repair

If charger + jack + button all test OK, motherboard chip-level repair (PMIC, EC, SIO) is needed.

No Display Repair

Some "not powering on" cases are actually no-display — fans spin, screen blank. Combined diagnosis.

BIOS Repair

A corrupted BIOS / EFI prevents POST. BIOS reflash recovers most boards without any board-level work.
