Ten common physical damage situations we handle every week. Each has a defined fix path — nothing here is a write-off unless we tell you so after diagnosis.
Corner impact is the most common. Results: chassis crack, bent lid corner, hinge misalignment, or cracked screen. All are individually repairable.
Uniform pressure from a heavy object bends the frame. Palmrest dent, cracked screen, internal frame flex. Body + screen combo assessment needed.
Hinge bracket snaps, bezel separates from lid. The lid may flop open or stay stuck. Hinge + bezel kit replacement fixes this permanently.
Impact-caused crack is different from a panel fault. Spider-web breaks, black ink blooms, or shattered glass from a corner hit. Panel replacement required.
SSD dislodged from M.2 slot, RAM stick unseated, or solder fracture on the motherboard from impact shock. Laptop doesn’t power on or loses its drive.
Cosmetic or structural dent after a drop or knock. Aluminium unibody (MacBook, Dell XPS) cannot be de-dented — cover replacement is the right fix.
Impact + liquid damage together. We handle both physical and liquid damage in a single assessment. See our liquid damage page for the liquid-specific protocol.
Checked-in bag dropped or crushed by baggage handlers. Screen, hinge, and frame are most vulnerable. Full assessment before any repair starts.
Sudden drops from table height crack the chassis corner or screen. Also: chewed charging cable or snapped port — DC jack replacement available separately.
Lid opened past its designed travel arc snaps the hinge post. Bezel lifts away from screen edge. Hinge bracket + bezel fix; confirm screen cable not damaged.
A laptop drop is a brief but violent mechanical event. When the laptop strikes a hard surface, the impact energy travels through the chassis in two directions simultaneously: inward (compressing the frame) and outward (rebounding through every component mounted inside). The screen panel is attached at the lid corners and flexes on impact. The motherboard is bolted to the palmrest base and absorbs the shock impulse directly through those standoffs. The storage drive and RAM modules sit in connectors that rely on friction — a sharp enough jolt can unseat either one. All of this happens in under 30 milliseconds.
This is why a drop diagnosis has to be thorough. Visual damage — the cracked bezel, bent corner, or cracked lid — is what the customer sees first. But the technician’s job is to check whether the impact also caused hidden functional damage: a RAM stick no longer seated properly (laptop beeps but doesn’t boot), an SSD that’s half-ejected from its M.2 slot (laptop boots but shows no drive), or a hairline crack in a solder joint on the motherboard (laptop works for a day, then develops random reboots or USB dropouts). We always do a full functional diagnostic alongside the visual assessment — a cracked bezel is cheap to fix; an undetected motherboard solder fracture that progresses over weeks is not.
The most underestimated failure mode is the hinge-bracket fracture. Laptop hinges are precision-machined metal brackets bolted through plastic chassis walls. The plastic around those bolts is engineered for the designed range of lid motion — open, close, repeat. When the laptop takes an impact with the lid open, the hinge levers against those plastic walls with a force far beyond anything the design anticipated. The bracket snaps the plastic mount point. This presents as a wobbly lid, a bezel lifting away from the screen at one corner, or a lid that won’t stay at the angle you set it. If ignored, the propagating crack will eventually reach the screen cable running through the hinge barrel, causing display flickering or blackout.
For drop-induced screen cracks, the damage pattern tells a story. A corner impact creates a characteristic radial crack pattern originating from the point of contact — different from the bloom-shaped pressure damage you see from a lid closed on an object. If the crack has only reached the glass surface layer and the display behind still works (rare on bonded panels, possible on older glass-separated displays), a digitiser swap might suffice. If the crack has penetrated to the liquid-crystal layer — visible as dark blooms, dead zones, or lines radiating from the crack — the whole panel must be replaced. We confirm this at diagnosis and quote the correct part: OEM panel, bezel, and screen cable check all in one go.
MacBook physical damage works differently because of the aluminium unibody design. Apple’s laptops since 2008 are CNC-machined from a single billet of aluminium — beautiful, but replacement-only when dented. There is no de-denting an aluminium chassis. A drop dent on the lid, base, or corner requires a full cover replacement. The M-series MacBook Air and Pro are particularly susceptible to lid corner dents at the screen joint — the aluminium compresses cleanly but the LCD assembly behind it takes the impact too. MacBook physical damage assessment always checks the display for micro-cracks, the MagSafe / USB-C ports for alignment, and the keyboard for flex deformation.
One firm principle we hold: we give you an honest repair assessment, not a parts-list. If your dropped laptop has a hairline crack on the palmrest that doesn’t affect structural integrity and you’re fine with it cosmetically, we’ll tell you there’s no urgent need to replace the body. If the hinge is cracked and the bezel is separating, we’ll tell you that ignoring it will cost more to fix in three months than it costs to fix today. You make the call with real information.
