Tell us what your charger is doing

Eight charger faults we diagnose on every visit. Sometimes the fix is a charger swap; sometimes it’s the laptop’s DC jack. We test both for free.

No power at all

Charger plugged in, charger LED off, laptop dead. Either the charger’s internal fuse blew or the wall outlet is dead.

Sparks at the pin or wall plug

Spark when you connect or unplug. Loose internal contacts — replace immediately, fire risk.

Charges only when wiggled

Cable works at certain angles, fails at others. Internal copper has fractured near the connector.

Charger gets very hot

Brick uncomfortably hot to touch. Internal capacitor or transformer failing — replace before it fails completely.

Frayed cable near connector

Insulation worn, copper visible. Short-circuit risk every time you move the laptop.

Broken / bent pin

Tip snapped or bent inside the jack. Charger needs replacement; check if jack is also damaged.

Charger LED dead

No light when plugged into wall, no power to laptop. Internal fuse blown or capacitors failed.

Buzzing / whining noise

Audible whine from the charger brick. Failing capacitor — can damage charging IC if left.

What’s really happening inside

What’s actually inside a laptop charger — and why cheap fakes can damage your laptop

A laptop charger is not a simple voltage converter. It’s a switching power supply: AC mains current is rectified, smoothed, chopped at high frequency by a transistor, sent through a transformer, rectified again, and filtered to deliver clean DC at the precise voltage your laptop needs (commonly 19V or 20V; USB-C chargers negotiate dynamically). The brick contains transformers, inductors, electrolytic capacitors, output diodes, and feedback control circuitry that monitors and adjusts hundreds of times per second to keep voltage stable as your laptop’s draw changes from idle to full load.

Two failure modes dominate what we see in Hyderabad. The first is capacitor degradation. The electrolytic capacitors that smooth the output voltage have a finite lifespan, typically 5–8 years under thermal stress. As they age, their equivalent series resistance climbs, and the charger can no longer deliver clean voltage under load. You see this as intermittent charging, the brick getting unusually hot, or the laptop refusing to charge while running heavy tasks. The second is cable fatigue — the copper conductors near the connector flex thousands of times and eventually fracture. Charging that works “only when I wiggle it” is the classic signature.

A non-certified ₹400 charger off Amazon can cost you the laptop. Lacking proper isolation transformers and over-current protection, a cheap charger that fails can deliver mains-level voltage straight to your motherboard. The ₹15,000 board it ruins isn’t covered by anyone’s warranty.

This is why we’re firm on certification. A genuine OEM charger or a properly engineered compatible carries BIS certification in India, CE in Europe, or UL/FCC in the US — markings that mean the charger has passed isolation, leakage, surge, and over-current tests. The unbranded chargers that flood Amazon and Flipkart often skip these tests entirely. They work fine on day one. They fail dangerously on day 60.

Wattage matching is the other technical detail customers underestimate. Modern laptops negotiate power on USB-C and detect total wattage on barrel connectors. A 65W laptop on a 45W charger will charge slowly and refuse to charge under heavy load — Windows pops a “slow charger” warning. A 65W laptop on a 90W charger usually works fine; the laptop draws only what it needs, headroom is wasted but harmless. Connector geometry, voltage, and minimum wattage all matter — we match exact OEM specs.

BISCertification we insist on for every charger we sell

Before quoting a charger, we test your existing one with a multimeter and a known-good load. If the charger is fine and the laptop’s DC jack is loose or damaged, that’s a different repair (₹1,200–₹2,500) and selling you a new charger would be the wrong fix. Honest diagnosis first; sale only if needed.

Laptop charger replacement — FAQ

What customers ask before booking a charger replacement in Hyderabad.

Related services

Other repairs that often go with charger replacement

A failed charger is often a symptom rather than the root cause — these are the repairs customers most frequently combine with a charger or AC adapter job.

Battery Replacement

If the laptop only works when plugged in, the battery has degraded to the point where a new charger alone won't restore untethered use.

DC Jack Repair

When a charger works on one laptop but not yours, the problem is usually the DC jack (the socket it plugs into) rather than the adapter itself.

Power Button Repair

If the laptop won't turn on even with a working charger, the power button or its circuit may be the cause — diagnosed in the same visit.

Motherboard Repair

A charger that sparks or causes the laptop to restart may have damaged the power-section components on the motherboard — board check included.

No Display Repair

If the laptop charges fine but the screen stays black, a secondary fault on the display circuit or GPU is often uncovered during the same session.

Overheating Repair

A charger running unusually hot can indicate the laptop is drawing more power than normal due to a blocked fan or failing thermal system.
