A modern laptop touchpad is a precision capacitive sensor — an array of tiny copper electrodes under a smooth surface that detects the change in capacitance when your finger gets close. Below that surface sits a microcontroller (the touchpad PCB) that translates the capacitance map into cursor movement, plus a mechanical click switch (the “diving-board” that flexes when you press). Three things commonly break: the ribbon cable connecting the touchpad to the motherboard (cheap, ₹500–₹1,200), the click switch (₹800–₹2,000 to swap), and the touchpad assembly itself (₹2,500–₹6,500 depending on model).
The single most common “touchpad doesn’t work” visit isn’t actually a touchpad fault. It’s a swollen battery sitting directly underneath, pressing up against the trackpad and confusing its capacitive sensor. The cursor jumps, double-clicks register without a press, gestures misfire.
