Most base replacement cases fall into one of these eight patterns. We’ve seen each one many times — there’s a fix for every single case.

Crack across the bottom case

Spider-web crack from a drop, table corner, or laptop-bag impact. Plastic fatigue at hinge mount or air vent.

Hinge mount split inside the base

Hinge no longer holds lid angle. Internal screw boss in the base has cracked away from the chassis.

Palmrest crack near touchpad

Visible crack running from palmrest edge towards the keyboard. Common on Aspire, VivoBook, Inspiron after 3-4 years of daily flex.

Bottom bulging from swollen battery

Battery has swollen and pushed the base outward. Replace battery and base together — once flexed, plastic doesn’t return.

Rubber feet / screws missing

Feet have come off, screws lost, base wobbles on a flat desk. Loose internal connections, intermittent shutdown risk.

Water-damaged warped base

Coffee/water spill warped the plastic. Base no longer aligns with the keyboard frame above it.

Brand label peeling / faded

Laptop is functionally fine but cosmetically tired — many customers replace the base for resale value.

After motherboard repair, base bent

Previous repair shop closed without aligning the base properly. Lid catches, battery sits crooked.

What’s really happening inside

Why a cracked base is worth replacing — not living with

A laptop’s base (or bottom case) does three jobs you don’t see: it provides structural rigidity for the keyboard frame and motherboard above it, it holds the hinge mounts that take the daily torque of opening and closing the lid, and it directs airflow through the bottom-mounted intake vents to the cooling fan. When the base cracks, all three are compromised. The keyboard starts flexing under your typing, the hinge mount loosens (lid won’t hold its angle), and dust gets pulled directly through the crack onto the motherboard. Living with a cracked base for 6 months often turns a ₹2,500 base swap into a ₹8,000 thermal-overheating-cleanup or a ₹15,000 motherboard repair.

The most common base-failure point is the hinge mount screw boss — a small plastic post that the hinge screws into. After 3-5 years of daily lid open/close cycles, the post fatigues and snaps off. The hinge then tears against the surrounding plastic on every open, widening the crack. We’ve seen Aspire, VivoBook, IdeaPad, Inspiron all develop this fault around the same year-mark. Reinforcing with epoxy buys you maybe 6 months; full base replacement gives the laptop another 3-4 years of life.

A cracked base looks cosmetic. It’s actually structural. The keyboard, motherboard, and hinge all rely on it. Six months of flex tears wires, breaks solder joints, and turns a ₹2,500 fix into a ₹15,000 one.

For MacBooks, Apple ships the bottom case as a single piece — the unibody design means the bottom is a milled aluminium plate, not plastic. Cracks are rare but dents, scuffs, and bent corners are common from drops or backpack pressure. Replacement is straightforward (10-screw bottom-case removal), and the part is genuine Apple aluminium with the right serial-number etch matching your laptop. ₹6,500–₹12,000 depending on model. The lid (display assembly) is a separate part with its own price — we always quote both if both are damaged.

For Windows laptops, the base is part of a 3-piece chassis: bottom case + palmrest (top frame, with keyboard) + lid. Each can be replaced independently with OEM-grade parts. Base replacement is the most common, palmrest second (usually for liquid damage), lid swap third. We carry Tier-1 OEM-spec parts for Dell Inspiron, Latitude, Vostro, XPS, HP Pavilion, Envy, Spectre, EliteBook, Lenovo IdeaPad, ThinkPad, Yoga, Asus VivoBook, ZenBook, ROG, Acer Aspire, Swift, Predator. Before quoting base replacement, we always assess whether epoxy reinforcement (₹500–₹1,500) buys enough life for an older laptop, or whether full base swap is the better long-term fix. We’ll tell you both options honestly with cost and life-extension estimates.
