When liquid hits a powered laptop, three things happen in sequence. First, conductive ions in the liquid (salt, sugar, minerals) create unintended electrical paths between motherboard traces — this is what causes the laptop to short-circuit, shut down, or behave erratically immediately after the spill. Second, the moment the liquid touches energised circuitry, electrolytic corrosion begins: the board’s copper traces oxidise rapidly, and tiny crystalline deposits form on every nearby component. Third, sugars in coffee, tea, and soft drinks create polymerised residue that bonds to the board surface as it dries — this is what makes a stale spill so much harder to clean than a fresh one.
