Why the first 60 seconds after a spill determine everything
A liquid spill on a running laptop is a two-phase problem. Phase one is the liquid itself — water is not conductive enough (at low ion concentration) to damage a board instantly. Phase two is the electrical fault — the moment current flows through wet traces, it deposits mineral salts, corrodes copper pads, and can arc across adjacent pins. Killing power before phase two begins is the only decision that matters.
Most board-level damage from spills is not caused by the liquid — it is caused by the user turning the laptop on to test it five minutes later. A laptop brought in unpowered, even 48 hours after a spill, has a much higher salvage rate than one powered on repeatedly in the hours after impact. Get that single action right and you save yourself thousands of rupees in repair costs.
The correct first-60-seconds protocol
Follow these steps in order, without skipping:
- Hold the power button for 5–8 seconds to force-off the laptop. Do not use Start → Shut Down → Restart. Windows takes 15–30 seconds to close gracefully; every second counts. A hard power-off is correct here.
- Flip the laptop upside down on a dry towel. The goal is gravity — liquid should drain away from the motherboard (which sits in the base) through the keyboard gaps rather than pooling on the board surface. Tent the laptop at a slight angle if possible.
- Remove the charger immediately. The DC jack is a direct path into the power circuit. If liquid has reached the DC jack area and the charger is still plugged in, you are delivering live voltage to a wet board.
- Do NOT use a hair dryer. Heat above 40°C degrades the IPA-soluble flux residue on the board — the same flux that protects solder joints from corrosion. More critically, the airflow pushes liquid deeper into the USB connector wells, the audio jack, and under chips where capillary action locks it in.
- Do NOT power it on again to test. This is the single most common mistake, and it is how most board burns happen. Curiosity costs more than repairs.
- Take it to a technician as soon as possible — ideally within 24 hours. The technician will perform an IPA (isopropyl alcohol) ultrasonic clean, inspect power rails with a multimeter, and test capacitor health before recommending further work.

The bad news: the cooling vents on the bottom are large, and liquid sitting on a desk can enter through the bottom vents if the laptop is placed on a wet surface. However, the Helios runs hotter than most laptops in India's climate, which means liquid that enters the chassis evaporates and re-deposits mineral salts on hot components faster than on a cool machine. Acer Predator Triton
This is the most critical model to handle correctly after a spill. A water spill near the CPU area of a Triton can cause the liquid metal to spread outside its designated application area, react with the aluminium heat spreader, or interact with any water that reaches the CPU socket area.
