Sometimes a speaker is genuinely blown; sometimes it’s the audio amp IC, sometimes a torn cone after a drop. We test before we sell — about 30% of "speaker dead" cases are software (driver, audio routing) or amp-IC fixes far cheaper than full speaker replacement. ₹1,500 onwards.
Eight common patterns we see weekly.
Speakers silent, headphones work fine. Audio amp IC or speaker connector unseated.
Sound plays but distorts at any volume. Speaker cone torn or amp IC degrading.
Output levels low. Failing amp or one channel dead.
Speaker side of audio path failed. Could be amp, traces, or speakers.
Liquid reached speaker components or board. Drying + replacement.
Loose speaker cable or grounding issue causing intermittent contact.
Stereo broken, one channel silent. Single speaker or one amp channel dead.
Driver or audio chip thermal issue. Sometimes software, sometimes hardware.
The audio path on a modern laptop has four stages. The OS sends a digital audio signal to the codec chip on the motherboard. The codec converts digital to analog. The signal then passes through an audio amplifier IC (Class-D switching amp on most laptops, sometimes a discrete amp on premium audio laptops) which boosts the small analog signal to drive the speakers. Finally, a thin ribbon cable carries the amplified signal to the speaker units embedded in the chassis. Failure at any stage means no sound — and the symptom looks identical regardless of which stage broke.
This is why diagnosis matters before replacement. About 30% of "dead speakers" are software issues — audio device disabled in Windows, wrong default output selected, missing audio driver after an update. Free fixes that bundle into the ₹149 visit. Another 25% are amp IC failures — the chip on the motherboard has stopped working, but the speakers themselves are perfectly intact. The remaining 45% are genuine speaker failures: torn cones from prolonged high-volume use, liquid damage, or aged-out diaphragms.
Modern laptops with Dolby Atmos / DTS audio add a software layer on top of hardware — if you hear distortion or unusual sounds, it can sometimes be the audio enhancement processing rather than the speakers. We turn off enhancements during diagnosis to isolate hardware-vs-software. Premium gaming laptops (Razer, ROG, Legion) and creator laptops (XPS, MacBook Pro) often have multi-driver speaker systems with separate woofers and tweeters — failure of one driver creates partial audio loss that’s harder to diagnose than complete failure.
MacBook speakers, particularly on M-series Pro models, use force-cancelling drivers and high-fidelity tuning that’s genuinely better than Windows ultrabook speakers. We replace MacBook speakers through our Apple-grade distributor channel; pricing reflects the higher quality of the parts.
If your speakers are crackling or distorting, lower the volume immediately and stop using audio until we’ve diagnosed — running torn speakers at high volume can damage the amp IC and turn a ₹2,000 speaker swap into a ₹6,000 amp + speaker replacement.

What customers ask before booking in Hyderabad.
Speaker faults often come bundled with these related repairs — audio circuits run through several other components.
No-sound on both speakers often points to the audio codec chip on the motherboard, not the speaker itself.
Cracked speaker grille on the palmrest or bottom cover is a body issue. Body replacement restores enclosure resonance.
Speakers and keyboard share the palmrest assembly on most laptops. Damaged palmrest replaces both as a kit.
If the speakers and camera both stopped working after a Windows update, it's a driver issue, not hardware.
Speakers wired through the hinge cable (uncommon but real on some MacBooks). Hinge fault can cut audio.
A spill onto the speaker grille blows the voice coil. Speaker swap after the board is cleaned and dried.
