Liquid itself does not destroy electronics — electricity passing through liquid does. The other major culprit is oxidation and corrosion that sets in as liquid dries on metal contacts.

Customers often expect tea or coffee to be similar to water — it’s still a liquid. But from a motherboard perspective, tea and coffee are chemically aggressive in ways pure water is not, and the cost difference reflects the extra work involved.
Pure water is electrically non-conductive when distilled. Tap water contains dissolved minerals (calcium, magnesium, iron) that leave conductive deposits when it evaporates — these can bridge circuit paths and cause short-circuits. That alone requires careful board cleaning. But tea and coffee go further: they contain tannins (aromatic compounds that form a hard, brown residue on copper), sugars (which caramelise into an insulating but hygroscopic sticky layer that attracts further moisture), and organic acids that attack copper and aluminium traces directly.
The result is that a tea-stained motherboard has multiple corrosion fronts — brown tannin deposits on connectors, sugar residue blocking solder points, and acid pitting on exposed copper traces. Our technicians clean these under a stereo microscope using 99% isopropyl alcohol, cotton swabs, and a soft fibre brush, and in some cases an ultrasonic bath. The time investment is 2–3× that of a clean water spill, which is why tea/coffee jobs are priced at ₹6,500–₹9,500 versus ₹3,500–₹5,500 for water.
Saltwater and sports drinks are the most damaging category because sodium chloride (common salt) accelerates electrochemical corrosion called galvanic corrosion — copper traces effectively dissolve in brine. Boards that were powered on during or after a saltwater contact often show visible green and blue corrosion within hours. If you have had a saltwater spill, bring the laptop immediately without powering on — even a few hours makes a significant difference to salvageability.
The same severity of spill can cost more or less depending on the brand — primarily due to board complexity, availability of replacement components, and how easy it is to fully disassemble the chassis for thorough cleaning.

Apple Silicon (M1, M2, M3, M4 MacBooks): The M-series chips integrate CPU, GPU, Neural Engine, and memory onto a single unified die package. If liquid reaches this package, even minor corrosion on the inter-die interconnects can cause partial failures (display output gone, USB-C not charging, fan running at full speed, random crashes) that are very difficult to isolate without Apple proprietary diagnostics. The repair involves micro-soldering under high magnification at the BGA (ball grid array) level — work that requires specific training and tooling beyond standard board cleaning.

Liquid damage warranty does not cover secondary components that failed from spill spread not visible at the time of repair. For example, if the GPU fails two weeks after a board cleaning due to hidden corrosion under the BGA, that is a new diagnosis. We will inspect and quote separately, not charge warranty labour.
If after full diagnosis we determine repair is not viable, we explain that before starting the main work.
