Keyboard failures on Asus laptops follow a predictable pattern depending on the model line — and the repair cost varies dramatically based on whether you have a standard membrane board or a per-key RGB unit. This guide breaks down what you can expect to pay for each Asus range, and when it actually makes sense to replace the full keyboard versus just cleaning after a spill.
VivoBook 14 and VivoBook 15 — the most common keyboard repair
The VivoBook 14 and VivoBook 15 use chiclet membrane keyboards with 1.4 mm of key travel — comfortable for typing but not particularly resilient to spills or heavy daily use over multiple years. The two failure modes we see most often in the workshop are spill damage (keys that stick or register intermittently because of sugar residue reaching the membrane layer) and worn-out key legends, where the printed characters fade after two or more years of use.
For most VivoBook models, the keyboard sits just beneath 8–12 bottom-panel screws, making access relatively straightforward. There is no special teardown sequence required, which keeps labour costs lower than on the more complex ZenBook or ROG chassis.
Full keyboard replacement (the only real option on a membrane keyboard with damaged contacts): ₹1,500–₹3,000. The variation depends on whether your model has a backlit keyboard variant, which costs slightly more to source.
Individual keycap replacement: ₹200–₹600 per key — but only when the plastic keycap or its hinge clip has broken off and the rubber dome membrane underneath is undamaged. If a key is not registering electrically, a new keycap alone will not help. The membrane needs to be replaced as a complete unit in that scenario. Don't let a shop charge you per-key prices for what is clearly an electrical contact failure — that diagnosis is wrong and the fix will not hold.
If you've spilled liquid and keys are sticky but still working intermittently, a professional cleaning (keyboard disassembly, contact cleaning with isopropyl alcohol) costs ₹500–₹1,000 and often restores function fully if you bring the laptop in within 24 hours. Beyond 48 hours, sugar and mineral residue begins to oxidise the copper contacts, and cleaning alone may not fully restore function. See our guide to Asus laptop liquid damage repair for a full spill response protocol.
ZenBook series — ErgoSense keyboards and the ZenBook Duo exception
ZenBook laptops use what Asus calls the ErgoSense keyboard: backlit chiclet keys with 1.5 mm of travel, a slightly more pronounced key dish for finger placement, and a spill-resistant membrane that channels small liquid quantities away from the circuit. This marketing term is frequently misread as waterproof — it is not. A larger spill, or tea or coffee with sugar, still reaches the membrane through key gaps and causes the same sticky-key failure you would see on a VivoBook.
ZenBook 14X UX5401 and similar models — full keyboard replacement: ₹2,500–₹4,500. The higher floor compared to the VivoBook reflects both the backlit ErgoSense part cost and the ZenBook's thinner chassis, which requires more careful disassembly to avoid damaging the display cable routing or the aluminium lid.
ZenBook Duo series is a separate conversation. These models pair the main keyboard with a ScreenPad Plus — a second touch display below the keyboard. Replacing the keyboard on a ZenBook Duo requires partial disassembly of the ScreenPad assembly, including disconnecting its display cable and reassembling the palm-rest unit correctly afterward. This adds significant labour time. Expect: ₹3,000–₹5,500. Parts availability for the ZenBook Duo keyboard is also more limited than for the standard ZenBook range, so factor in a potential wait of 3–7 business days if the specific SKU needs sourcing.
ROG Strix and Zephyrus — per-key RGB is a different beast
ROG gaming laptops present the most technical keyboard replacement scenario in the Asus lineup, because the range spans two distinct keyboard constructions that look similar from the outside but behave very differently in repair.
Standard zoned RGB (ROG Strix G15, G16, G17)
Most ROG Strix models ship with a four-zone RGB backlit keyboard. The backlighting is divided into four colour bands controlled through the Armoury Crate software, but the underlying keyboard construction is still a standard membrane — each key does not have its own dedicated LED. When this keyboard fails (most commonly from spill damage under the WASD area after gaming with drinks nearby), the entire keyboard unit is replaced as one piece.
Full replacement cost: ₹2,500–₹5,000. The ROG Strix chassis is relatively accessible once the bottom panel screws are removed, and most models do not require full teardown to reach the keyboard connector.
Per-key RGB (ROG Strix Scar, Zephyrus Duo 16, select Strix G15/G16 premium SKUs)
This is where keyboard repair on an Asus laptop gets genuinely complex. Per-key RGB keyboards have a dedicated RGB LED and controller circuit for each individual key. The advantage is fine-grained lighting customisation via Aura Creator; the practical consequence for repairs is a more expensive and less interchangeable unit.
Common failure modes with per-key RGB keyboards:
- Individual key LED burns out — one key stops lighting up but still registers keystrokes normally. This is cosmetic and does not affect typing. Replacement of a single key LED is not a practical repair; the full unit is replaced.
- Entire zone stops responding — an entire row or column of keys becomes unresponsive, both to input and lighting. This is typically a matrix cable fault or a damaged flex connector on the keyboard PCB, not a software issue.
- Lighting stuck on one colour — keys light up but ignore Aura commands. This is almost always a driver issue, not a hardware failure. Before spending anything on replacement, uninstall Armoury Crate entirely, remove the Aura sync driver via Device Manager, restart, and reinstall Aura Creator fresh. This resolves the problem in the majority of cases.
Full per-key RGB keyboard unit replacement: ₹3,500–₹8,000. The wide range reflects the significant difference in part cost between a 2022 Strix Scar and a 2024 Zephyrus Duo 16 unit.
One critical point: per-key RGB keyboards are not interchangeable between ROG model years. A 2022 ROG Strix keyboard will not physically fit a 2024 Strix chassis — the connector pinout and firmware handshake with the embedded controller differ. Always confirm the exact model number and build year before ordering a replacement unit, or let the technician source it against the chassis serial number.
TUF Gaming A15 and F15 — built tougher, but WASD spills still happen
The TUF Gaming range uses a tenkeyless backlit keyboard (no numpad) built into a chassis that undergoes MIL-STD-810H testing for dust, vibration, and drop resistance. The keyboard itself is more durable than the VivoBook equivalent in terms of structural build, but it is not meaningfully more resistant to liquid damage — and gaming sessions with drinks nearby make WASD spill damage a recurring repair job.
The TUF A15 and F15 keyboard is accessed from the bottom panel in the same way as the VivoBook, and parts are generally available across most build years.
Full keyboard replacement: ₹2,000–₹4,000. The higher end of that range applies to models with RGB backlighting versus the single-colour white backlight on base TUF configurations.
Membrane vs mechanical — understanding what you actually have
A question that comes up regularly: "Can I replace just the individual switch under the keycap?" The answer depends on the keyboard type, and this distinction matters for avoiding unnecessary expense.
Membrane keyboards (all VivoBook, ZenBook, TUF, and most ROG models): The key mechanism is a rubber dome sitting over a printed circuit membrane sheet. There is no individual switch that can be hot-swapped. When a key stops registering, it is because the membrane contact point under that key has failed — and the membrane is one continuous sheet for the whole keyboard. You cannot repair a membrane keyboard at the individual key level; the full unit must be replaced. Any shop quoting you "individual key membrane repair" for an unresponsive key is either misinformed or offering a temporary physical fix (replacing the keycap or clip) that will not address the underlying electrical fault.
Mechanical keyboards: A small number of ROG Strix and Zephyrus models from 2021 onward use optical or mechanical switches (Asus lists these specifically in the spec sheet as "ROG NX Optical" or "ROG NX mechanical" switches). These do allow individual switch replacement in theory — but in practice, most keyboard-level faults on these models still result in full unit replacement because the integrated RGB diffuser layer and keycap alignment make single-switch service impractical outside a dedicated laptop keyboard bench. Confirm the exact keyboard type on your model before assuming individual switch repair is possible.
What spill damage does to a keyboard — and what to do in the first 24 hours
Liquid damage follows a reliable progression. When liquid enters a laptop keyboard, it first pools around the rubber dome contacts under the keys. Plain water is relatively benign if dried quickly — the issue is mineral content. Coffee, tea with sugar, or soft drinks leave a sticky residue of dissolved sugars and organic compounds on the copper contact pads. As this residue dries, it oxidises the contacts, creating an insulating layer that prevents the key from registering even when pressed.
The immediate response if liquid reaches your Asus keyboard:
- Power off immediately — hold the power button for five seconds. Do not try to save files first; the risk of a short circuit across the board is more serious than unsaved work.
- Invert the laptop over a dry surface and let gravity pull liquid away from the board.
- Do not use rice. Rice absorbs atmospheric moisture but does nothing to remove sugar or salt residue from contact surfaces inside the keyboard — and it can leave rice starch in the chassis.
- Bring the laptop for professional cleaning within 24 hours. The cleaning cost at this stage is ₹500–₹1,000 and success rates are high.
- If corrosion has set in from delayed treatment, full keyboard replacement is needed: ₹1,500–₹8,000 depending on the model.
