HP Pavilion 14, 15, 17 (2013–2020)

Most Pavilion consumer notebooks in this window use the 4.5mm barrel. Pavilion 14-AB, 14-AL, 14-CE, 15-AB, 15-AC, 15-AY, 15-CC, 15-CS, 17-G, 17-X series. Intel 4th-10th gen depending on sub-model.

HP ProBook 430, 440, 450, 470 G3–G7

HP’s mid-range business line. G3 through G7 revisions (2016–2020) all use the 4.5mm blue-pin barrel. Very common in Hyderabad corporate and SMB fleets.

HP EliteBook 820, 840, 850 G3–G5 · 1040 G3–G4

How do I tell if my HP charger is a blue-pin (4.5mm) vs old yellow-pin (7.4mm) vs USB-C? +
Look at the tip of the charger connector. Blue-pin (4.5mm barrel): the barrel tip is roughly the size of a matchstick, and the inside of the metal sleeve is painted blue. Yellow-pin (7.4mm): older and thicker barrel, roughly twice the diameter, no blue interior. USB-C: flat, reversible connector — no barrel at all. Can I use a 90W or 45W charger instead of 65W on my HP? +
90W: yes, the laptop draws only what it needs — the excess wattage just isn’t used. No harm. 45W: risky for sustained workloads. The adapter may overheat, charge very slowly under load, or fail to keep the battery topped up while the laptop is running CPU-intensive tasks. Always match or exceed the original wattage. A 65W is the correct spec for most Pavilion, ProBook, and EliteBook models in the 2013–2020 era.
Why does my HP show a “charger may not function properly” or “plugged in, not charging” warning? +
