The amber CLN LED returns within hours of a fresh HP C7978A universal cleaning cartridge — a classic sign of head contamination on the LTO-9 narrow-track array, or a head nearing end-of-life. We run an L&TT extended head-health test to determine whether cleaning or replacement is needed.
The library reports barcode misreads, slot pickup failures or “robot offline” at boot. The picker arm has drifted off calibration. We re-teach picker-arm position via L&TT and inspect the barcode reader (BCR) assembly.
The drive enumerates on the HBA (host bus adapter — the SAS card in the server) then disappears under sustained Veeam or Backup Exec load. Root cause is typically the mini-SAS HD connector or the drive’s interface board rather than the HBA itself.
The drive is stuck at 0x0F self-test code after an L&TT firmware push. We recover it via HPE’s serial-port firmware-rescue procedure — power-cycling the drive without the proper recovery method bricks it permanently.
The MSL controller’s RMC (Remote Management Console) can see the drive sled but logs it offline. This is a controller card or midplane fault, not a drive fault. We isolate using L&TT’s library diagnostic mode.
Soft errors are climbing past the threshold logged in TapeAssure, calibration has drifted, and the head is approaching end-of-life. We confirm with an ITDT extended test and quote before proceeding to head replacement.
