The PERC H730 (Dell’s SAS RAID controller — the card managing SAS connections inside the PowerEdge server) does not enumerate the LTO drive. Usually a firmware version mismatch between the PERC and the drive, or a cable/connector fault. We test with a spare HBA to isolate.
The Import/Export station (the mailslot that lets you add or remove cartridges without opening the library) fails to load the cartridge to the drive position. Root cause: mailslot solenoid wear or a slot-teach drift. We re-teach via the library’s management interface.
Dell’s DUP (Dell Update Package) firmware utility pushed a mid-flash failure, leaving the drive unable to complete self-test. We recover via serial firmware rescue with the correct Dell-signed image.
The ML3 library’s robotic arm loses slot positioning across power cycles. The calibration sensor is either dirty or failing. We clean the sensor, re-teach the arm, and verify across a full library inventory scan.
The drive’s internal fan has stopped or slowed, triggering thermal shutdown after 30–40 minutes of backup load. We replace the fan module and verify thermal recovery before return.
A leader-pin misalignment or mechanism dust jam prevents cartridge ejection. Manual bench recovery with the autoloader opened — never force-eject, as that can tear the leader pin and damage the tape.
