This post is for anyone with a MacBook Air or MacBook Pro who sees three different macOS names in the news and is not sure which one belongs on their Mac. By the end you will know which lines Apple supports, which one fits an Apple silicon MacBook and which one fits an Intel MacBook, and how to keep whichever you choose fully up to date. No technical background is needed.
Which macOS should my MacBook run?
Short answer: If your MacBook has an Apple silicon chip (M1 or later) and runs well today, any of the three supported lines is acceptable. Golden Gate 27 is the newest. If your MacBook has an Intel chip, Tahoe 26 is the last major version it can ever get. In every case, install the latest point update of the line you pick.
What did Apple release, and when?
On 14 September 2026 Apple released macOS Golden Gate 27, macOS Tahoe 26.7 and macOS Sequoia 15.8 on the same day. Tahoe and Sequoia remain supported alongside the new major version (a major version is the big yearly release with a new name). On 28 September 2026 Apple followed with macOS Golden Gate 27.0.1, Tahoe 26.7.1 and Sequoia 15.8.1.
Newer updates may have followed since. Apple's security releases page lists every update with its date, so check it for today's position.
Which line fits my type of MacBook?
Apple silicon MacBook (M1 or later)
Choose Golden Gate 27 if you want the newest features and your important apps, such as accounting software, printer tools or college software, say they support it. Stay on Tahoe or Sequoia if one of those apps has not caught up. Waiting a few weeks for your app maker to confirm support is a sensible choice.
Intel MacBook
macOS 26 Tahoe is the last version for Intel Macs. Golden Gate 27 will not install on them. Older Intel MacBooks are legacy models: they still work, but check Apple's compatibility list for your exact model to see which macOS it can run. Use the latest update your Mac is offered and keep it for browsing, documents and email. Our post on backing up an Intel Mac that stays on macOS 26 explains the safe way to do this.
Not sure which chip you have
Click the Apple menu at the top left, then About This Mac. A line saying Chip followed by a name such as Apple M2 means Apple silicon. A line saying Processor followed by Intel means an Intel Mac. The wording can differ slightly between versions.
How do I check my Mac and stay on the latest update?
- Open the Apple menu, then System Settings, then General, then Software Update.
- If an update for your current line is shown, install it. Your Mac will restart once or twice.
- If a major upgrade is offered, Apple shows it as a separate button or banner. You are not forced to take it.
- Turn on automatic updates from the small Info button beside Automatic Updates, so security fixes arrive without you remembering.
Our guides on checking if your Mac can run macOS 27 and backing up your Mac before the macOS 27 upgrade cover those steps in more detail. Apple's own security releases page shows the newest version numbers.
Power cuts and big macOS upgrades
A major upgrade downloads several gigabytes and then installs for a long time. Patchy broadband can interrupt the download, and a power cut or voltage dip during installation can leave the Mac stuck on the Apple logo. Keep the MacBook plugged in with the original charger, and do not close the lid or force it off while the progress bar is moving. If your area has frequent cuts, start the upgrade in the morning with the battery above half and a stable connection.
When to get help
Stop and ask a technician if any of these happen:
- The Mac stays on the Apple logo or a progress bar for hours after an update.
- It restarts again and again, or shows a folder with a question mark.
- The battery drains very quickly or the case feels warm after the update finishes.
- You need files from a Mac that will not start.

A note from the LRW Engineer Team
Back up before you change macOS lines. The newest macOS is not automatically the best one for your Mac. Pick the line your chip supports and your key apps accept, back up first, and then keep that line updated. Keeping a Tahoe or Sequoia Mac updated matters more than chasing the newest name.
