How to back up your Mac before upgrading to macOS 27

LR LRW Engineer Team ~5 min read

Key takeaways

  • macOS 27 Golden Gate was released on 14 September 2026 and runs only on Apple silicon Macs. Intel Macs stay on macOS 26 Tahoe, which was the last version for them.
  • Back up with Time Machine (the Mac's built-in backup) to an external drive, then browse the backup and open a few files to prove it holds real data.
  • Do not start the upgrade until the first full backup has finished and you have checked that you can open files from it.
  • Keep the MacBook on its charger, use a steady connection for the large download, and do not close the lid or unplug anything while the installer runs.

This post is for MacBook, iMac and Mac mini owners who have seen the macOS 27 notification and want to upgrade without risking family photos, college work or office files. You will learn how to check whether your Mac is eligible, how to make a Time Machine backup, how to test it, and what to do if the upgrade goes wrong. No technical knowledge is needed, only a spare drive and some patience.

How do I back up my Mac before macOS 27?

Short answer: Connect an external drive, open System Settings, choose General, then Time Machine, and add the drive as your backup disk. Let the first backup finish completely, then open the backup and check that you can see and open your files. Only then install macOS 27. A backup you have never looked inside is a guess, not a safety net.

Is my Mac able to run macOS 27?

Apple released macOS 27 Golden Gate on 14 September 2026. It runs on Apple silicon Macs only (Macs with M-series chips, such as M1 and later). Intel Macs cannot install it, and macOS 26 Tahoe was the last version of macOS for Intel Macs. Mac news sites report that older models are dropped, among them the 2019 16-inch MacBook Pro, the 2020 13-inch MacBook Pro with four ports, the 2020 27-inch iMac and the 2019 Mac Pro. Check Apple's own compatibility page for your exact model. Open the Apple menu, choose About This Mac and look at the chip line: it says Apple M1, M2 and so on, or Intel.

If your Mac is Intel, nothing is wrong. It keeps working on Tahoe, and a backup is still a good idea. Some Siri features in macOS 27 also need an M3 chip or newer with 12 GB of memory, so a Mac that can install the upgrade may not get every feature.

What you need before you start

  • An external drive with more free space than the data on your Mac. Our guide on external SSD versus HDD for backup helps you choose.
  • Your Apple Account password. You may be asked for it during and after the upgrade.
  • A charger and a steady internet connection.
  • About an hour for the first backup. Large photo libraries take longer.

Step by step: Time Machine backup

1. Set up the backup disk

Plug in the drive. Open System Settings, then General, then Time Machine, and choose Add Backup Disk. The wording can differ slightly between versions. If the Mac offers to erase the drive, read the message carefully, because erasing removes anything already on it.

2. Wait for the first full backup

Do not interrupt it. Keep the MacBook plugged in and the lid open.

3. Check the backup

Open the Time Machine browser from the menu bar, move back to the latest backup and open two or three documents, a photo and one large video. Check that the date is today's. This is the same idea as in our guide to testing your backup with a restore.

4. Add a second copy of what matters most

Drag your photos and work folders onto a plain drive or to your cloud account. Two copies in two places beat one.

An iCloud sync is not a backup. If you delete a file on the Mac, the deletion can follow it to iCloud. Keep a separate copy as well.

If you run your own Time Machine disk on a network

Offices that back up several Macs to a network drive can follow our guide on Time Machine over SMB to a NAS. Network backups are slower on the first run, so start early in the day.

Large downloads, power cuts and the monsoon

The macOS download is large, and a patchy broadband line can make it stall or restart. Start the download when your connection is steady, not during peak evening hours, and avoid a mobile hotspot with a small data pack. Voltage dips and power cuts are the bigger risk: a Mac that loses power in the middle of an install can fail to start. Keep a MacBook on its charger and put an iMac or Mac mini behind a UPS (a small battery backup). In humid monsoon weeks, keep the external drive in a dry place and away from the charger and the table edge.

When to get help

  • The Mac shows a progress bar for a very long time, restarts in a loop or shows a prohibition sign after the upgrade.
  • Time Machine reports an error, or the backup will not open.
  • Your Mac asks for an Apple Account password you no longer remember and shows Activation Lock.
  • The drive inside the Mac is making noises, or files are missing after the update.

Our data recovery service begins with a diagnosis. You can also look at our Apple MacBook repair hub. In Hyderabad we offer a doorstep service, and the charge is ₹149 doorstep visit fee, waived when you approve laptop repair with us. Recovery quotes are shared for approval before any work. Do not erase or reinstall the Mac before you have copied what you need. Apple silicon Macs keep their storage on the main board, so recovery is harder than on older machines.

A note from the LRW Engineer Team

Upgrade on a day when you are not rushing to a deadline. Make the backup in the morning, test one restore, and start the installer after lunch with the charger connected. If your Mac is an Intel model, you can stay on macOS 26 Tahoe with a clear conscience, and update the browser and apps regularly.
