Can you use Time Machine to back up to a NAS over Wi-Fi?
Short answer: Yes — macOS Sequoia Time Machine supports backing up to any NAS (Network Attached Storage device — a small always-on server for home file storage) that exposes an SMB (Server Message Block — the standard network file-sharing protocol) share. Synology DSM 7.x, QNAP QTS 5.x, and WD My Cloud all officially support Time Machine over SMB. Once configured, Time Machine runs automatically every hour whenever the Mac is on the same network as the NAS.
How to set up Time Machine over SMB to a NAS
Step 1: Create a Time Machine share on the NAS
Synology (DSM 7.x): Open the DSM web interface, go to Control Panel → Shared Folder → Create. Name the folder (e.g., TimeMachineBackup), choose the volume. After creation, go to File Services → SMB → Advanced Settings and enable Enable Time Machine support. Select the folder you just created as the Time Machine target. Also go to Control Panel → User & Group, create a dedicated backup user with read/write access to the folder. QNAP (QTS 5.x): Go to Control Panel → Network & File Services → Win/Mac/NFS → Apple Networking. Enable AFP or SMB (use SMB in Sequoia). In Shared Folders, add the folder and tick Time Machine Backup. Set a quota to limit space usage.
Step 2: Mount the NAS share on your MacBook
In Finder, press Cmd+K (Connect to Server). Enter smb://<NAS-IP>/TimeMachineBackup — replace <NAS-IP> with the NAS's local IP address (visible in the NAS admin panel, typically 192.168.x.x). Enter the backup user credentials you created. Check Remember this password in my keychain so macOS auto-mounts the share. After connecting, the NAS folder appears in Finder's sidebar under Locations. Keep it mounted — Time Machine needs it to be accessible when backups run.
Step 3: Add the NAS share to Time Machine
Open System Settings → General → Time Machine → Add Backup Disk. The mounted NAS share should appear in the disk list. Select it. If it does not appear, ensure the share is still mounted in Finder first. Set a backup frequency (default: every hour — suitable for most users). The first full backup starts immediately — estimated time: 2–12 hours depending on Mac storage size and network speed. Subsequent backups are incremental and take 1–5 minutes.
Step 4: The India angle — power cuts and backup integrity
India's power infrastructure means unexpected outages are common — especially in summer months and monsoon season. A Time Machine backup interrupted by a power cut mid-write can corrupt the backup sparse bundle (the container file on the NAS that holds the backup). Two practices protect against this: connect the NAS to a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply — a battery backup device); and periodically verify the backup by opening Time Machine preferences and clicking Verify Backups.
