If you are a student or anyone with an older MacBook, you may have seen the news that macOS 27 is out and wondered if your Mac can run it. This guide shows you, in two minutes, how to read your Mac's year and chip in About This Mac, how to tell if it is on the list, and what to do if it is not. You do not need any technical background, and you will not change any setting.
Can my Mac run macOS 27?
Short answer: Only if it has an Apple silicon chip (Apple's own processor, named M1, M2, M3 and so on). macOS 27 Golden Gate came out on 14 September 2026 and does not support Intel Macs at all. Open the Apple menu and choose About This Mac. If it shows a Chip line starting with Apple M, check Apple's compatibility list. If it shows Processor with Intel, your Mac stays on macOS 26 Tahoe.
Step 1: Open About This Mac
- Click the Apple logo at the top left of the screen.
- Choose About This Mac.
- Look at the first lines of the window. The wording can differ slightly between macOS versions.
What you should see
If your About This Mac window shows a model name and year, note them down. That is what any technician or Apple's page will ask for.
Which Macs are dropped?
Apple announced macOS 27 at its developer event on 8 June 2026. According to MacRumors' report on the compatibility change, macOS 27 drops these Intel models: the 2019 16-inch MacBook Pro, the 2020 13-inch MacBook Pro with four ports, the 2020 27-inch iMac and the 2019 Mac Pro. These were the last Intel Macs still on the supported list, so macOS 26 Tahoe is the last macOS for Intel Macs. Apple's own compatibility page is the final word for your exact model, so check it before you buy or sell anything.
One more detail. Some Siri features in macOS 27 need an M3 chip or later and 12 GB of memory, so a Mac can run macOS 27 and still not offer every feature. Check the feature list on Apple's page for what your Mac gets.
What if my Mac is on the list?
- Open System Settings, then General, then Software Update.
- Connect the charger and keep storage free; a major update needs several gigabytes.
- Make a Time Machine backup (Apple's built-in backup) before you start. Our guide to keeping Time Machine backups fast and reliable helps.
- Do not close the lid or shut down while it installs.
What if my Mac is not on the list?
Do not worry. Your Mac keeps working on macOS 26 Tahoe, and your files, browser and apps stay as they are. Here are sensible options.
- Keep using it for study, notes, browsing and documents.
- Make sure every app you rely on still works on Tahoe before you plan any change.
- If it feels slow, a technician can check the storage, battery and dust build-up before you spend on a replacement. Our MacBook repair page lists what we service.
- If you are thinking of a newer Apple silicon MacBook, see our M4 versus M3 comparison. Prices changed in India in late June 2026, so look at Apple India's store for the current figure.
Second-hand MacBooks and slow downloads
Many students buy a second-hand or older MacBook, so the year printed on the seller's box may not match what About This Mac shows. Always trust About This Mac. Heat and dust also slow older MacBooks in the summer months, and a clean-out sometimes feels like an upgrade. Power cuts and weak broadband can interrupt big downloads, so install on steady broadband with the charger connected, not on a phone hotspot.
When to get help
- The Mac restarts again and again during or after a macOS update.
- The screen shows a folder with a question mark or a prohibited sign.
- About This Mac will not open or shows a blank chip line.
- You have no backup and the Mac will not start.
Our Apple MacBook repair page covers these cases. In Hyderabad we can visit through our doorstep service for ₹149 doorstep visit fee, waived when you approve laptop repair with us, and we accept MacBooks by courier from anywhere in India.
A note from the LRW Engineer Team
Do not feel pushed to buy a new Mac because a new macOS arrived. A Mac that runs well today does not stop being useful because a new macOS arrived. Check the chip, keep your backup current and decide on a replacement only when your apps or your battery actually stop meeting your needs.
