You open System Settings on your Intel Mac, look for the macOS 27 update and find nothing. That is expected, and it does not mean the Mac is broken. This post is for home users, students and small office owners who plan to keep an Intel MacBook, iMac or Mac mini for a few more years. You will learn what changed, what to copy and where to keep the copies, and how to test the backup in ten minutes.
How do I back up an Intel Mac that cannot run macOS 27?
Short answer: Keep two copies besides the Mac itself. Use Time Machine (the Mac's built-in backup tool) with an external drive for the first copy, and a second copy in cloud storage or on another drive stored away from home. Your Intel Mac stays on macOS 26 Tahoe, the last version it can use, and a regular backup protects your files whatever Apple does next.
What changed, in plain words
Apple released macOS 27 on 14 September 2026. It runs only on Apple silicon Macs, meaning Macs with Apple's own chips such as the M-series. macOS 26 Tahoe, released on 15 September 2025, is the last version for Intel Macs, and its latest update is 26.7 from 14 September 2026. Check Apple's support page from time to time to see how long macOS 26 keeps receiving security updates on Intel Macs.
Staying on an older version does not delete anything. Your photos, documents and apps carry on as before. The risk is different: an older Mac is more likely to have an ageing drive and battery, and over time some new apps may stop supporting it. A good backup covers all of that.
What should I copy?
Time Machine copies the whole Mac, so you do not have to hunt for each folder. The second copy can be smaller: just photos and documents is enough.
Which copy goes where?
Copy one: Time Machine at home
Connect an external drive, open System Settings, choose General, then Time Machine, and select the drive. The wording can differ slightly between versions. Time Machine may erase the drive you choose, so use a drive that holds nothing you need. Our guide to choosing an external SSD or hard drive for backup explains the options.
Copy two: away from the house
Fire, theft, a power surge or a flooded room can take the Mac and the drive together. Keep a second copy elsewhere: cloud storage, or a second drive kept at a relative's home or your office and refreshed every month or two. Our post on cloud versus external drive backup compares the two for Indian broadband and budgets.
Check the copy
Open the drive, pick one file, and copy it back to the Desktop. If it opens, the backup works. Our note on why you must test a backup with a restore shows the idea in more detail.
Power cuts, damp weather and slow uploads
Power cuts and voltage swings are a common reason an external drive stops working or a backup ends half-done. Plug the Mac and the drive into a surge-protected socket, and do not pull the drive out while the backup is running. Humidity in the monsoon months and dust can affect any drive, so keep the backup drive in a dry box, not on a window ledge. If you use cloud storage, a large first upload can take days on a slow connection, so start it at night and let it run.
When to get help
- The Mac shows a question mark folder at start, or a circle with a line through it.
- The Mac makes clicking or grinding sounds from the drive.
- Time Machine keeps saying the backup failed, or the drive does not appear.
- You have only one copy of work you cannot redo.
If the Mac shows these signs, stop using it and do not try to repair the drive yourself, because every extra start-up can overwrite recoverable data. Our data recovery service reads the drive carefully before anything is changed. In Hyderabad we visit you at home through our doorstep service, and the charge is ₹149 doorstep visit fee, waived when you approve laptop repair with us. Laptops can also come to us by courier from anywhere in India. The exact quote comes after diagnosis and is shared for approval before any work.
A note from the LRW Engineer Team
Put a repeating reminder on your phone for the first Sunday of each month: connect the drive, let Time Machine finish, restore one file, and update your second copy. It takes less than half an hour. An Intel Mac can serve you well for years, and a calm routine is the best way to make sure its files outlast it.
