This is for anyone with an Asus laptop or desktop that has Armoury Crate, GPU Tweak or AI Suite 3 installed, whether it is a gaming ROG or TUF or an everyday model. You will learn what ASUS itself lists, why it is not a cause for panic, how to run the update step by step, and how to check today's status on ASUS's own advisory page. The steps apply to any PC that has these programs installed.
How do I install the Armoury Crate security update on my Asus laptop?
Short answer: Open Armoury Crate, go to its Update Center, install every available update, restart the PC, and then check that the versions have changed. ASUS listed CVE-2026-8917 on 11 August 2026, and Guru3D, HotHardware and Digital Citizen reported that ASUS advised applying all component updates through the Update Center.
What does ASUS's own list say?
ASUS's product security advisory page lists CVE-2026-8917 as "Security Update for ASUS GPU Tweak III, GPU Tweak II, AI Suite 3, and Armoury Crate", published on 11 August 2026. That date is ASUS's own. The affected software, as ASUS states it, is:
If a version number on your PC is higher than the one in the table, that item is past the listed range. If it is the same or lower, update it.
What was reported about the risk?
The same outlets rate the flaw 8.4 on the CVSS scale, which is High. ASUS's list page itself shows no score, so treat the number as the press's. They describe a kernel driver (a low-level driver that runs with high privileges in Windows) that a program already running on the PC could use to write to protected memory and gain more control than it should have.
The reports describe it as a local issue, not a remote or unauthenticated one. In plain words: a stranger on the internet cannot use it on its own, but it is still worth closing.
Why is Armoury Crate itself listed twice more?
ASUS's list also shows two separate Armoury Crate App bulletins. CVE-2026-16727, published on 30 July 2026, affects versions before 6.5.7.0. A second bulletin, published on 8 September 2026, covers ten further CVEs for Armoury Crate up to and including 6.5.7.0. So 6.5.7.0 itself is listed as affected.
The practical point: update Armoury Crate to a version later than 6.5.7.0. We have not stated a fixed version number because ASUS's list does not give one in what we checked. The ASUS product security advisory page shows the current wording.
How do I update step by step?
Menu wording can differ slightly between versions of Armoury Crate.
- Connect the charger. Do not run the update on battery alone, and do not shut the lid or switch off while it runs.
- Open Armoury Crate from the Start menu.
- Open Settings (the gear icon) and choose Update Center.
- Select Check for updates, then install every item listed, including the core and driver components, not only the headline one.
- Restart the PC when asked. Some parts finish installing only after a restart.
- Open Update Center again. If it says everything is up to date, you are done. If new items appear, repeat the steps once more.
If you also use GPU Tweak or AI Suite 3
Open each program and look for its own update option, or its entry in the Armoury Crate Update Center. Install what is offered. If you no longer use a tool, you may uninstall it from Windows Settings, Apps. A program you do not run cannot be a doorway.
How do I confirm it worked and check today's status?
- After the restart, check the version shown in Update Center or in each program's About page, and note it. Compare it with the table above and with 6.5.7.0 for Armoury Crate.
- ASUS can revise advisories, so open the product security advisory page on asus.com and look for CVE-2026-8917 and the Armoury Crate App bulletins.

Power cuts and slow broadband during updates
Updates need a steady supply and a steady connection. A power cut during a driver update can leave Windows or the program in a broken state. Keep the laptop plugged in, and if cuts are common, do the update when supply is steady, or use a small UPS (a battery box that keeps power on for a few minutes). On slow or patchy broadband, let each download finish before you start the next. If a download keeps failing, try again later rather than interrupting it halfway.
When to get help
Ask a technician if:
- Update Center will not open, keeps failing, or shows an error;
- Windows shows a blue screen or the laptop will not start after an update;
- you suspect unwanted programs are already on the PC;
- you are unsure which Asus tools are installed.
