This is for anyone who maintains their own laptop, such as an accounts manager in Indore who keeps Tally and customer files on a work machine and sees a BIOS update notice from the manufacturer. You will get a short checklist to repeat before every BIOS update, an explanation of why a recovery key matters, and clear signs for when to stop and ask a technician.
What should I do before every laptop BIOS update?
Short answer: Back up your files, save your BitLocker recovery key somewhere other than the laptop, plug in the charger and close all programs. Then read the maker's release notes and start the update only when the power is steady. Once it starts, leave the laptop alone until it has restarted and reached Windows by itself.
Why does a BIOS update need preparation?
The BIOS (the small program that starts the laptop before Windows loads) is stored on a chip on the motherboard. An update rewrites it. If the power fails midway, the laptop may not start. A BIOS change can also alter what BitLocker (Windows' built-in drive lock) sees at start-up, and BitLocker may then ask for its 48-digit recovery key before it opens your files.
Two recent cases show why the habit is worth having.
Microsoft said home devices were unlikely to be affected by the first case. Neither case means a brand is at fault; both are routine reminders to prepare. If you use an office laptop, your IT team may control updates, so ask them before updating anything.
The five-step checklist
Step 1: Back up your files
Copy your documents, Tally data, photos and browser bookmarks to an external drive or cloud folder, then open one copied file. If you use accounting software, see our guide to Tally data backup and recovery.
Step 2: Save the BitLocker recovery key
Look in your Microsoft account on your phone, or in Settings under Privacy and security, Device encryption. The wording can differ slightly between versions. Write the key on paper. If BitLocker asks for a key you cannot find, do not keep guessing or reinstall Windows, because that can erase your files.
Step 3: Connect power and settle the laptop
Connect the charger and make sure the battery is above half. Close other programs. For a desktop, plug it into a UPS (a small battery backup).
Step 4: Read the release notes
On the maker's support page, read what the update fixes. If it fixes nothing you face, you may skip it. Our guide on updating a laptop BIOS safely shows the steps.
Step 5: Run it and wait
Do not switch the laptop off, close the lid or press keys while the BIOS update is running. The screen may go blank and the fans may spin loudly. That is normal. Wait until Windows appears.
Power cuts and BIOS updates in Indian offices and homes
Power is a real risk in India. A short cut or a voltage dip in the middle of a BIOS write can leave a laptop that will not start. Pick a time when the supply is steady, avoid storm evenings, and consider a UPS for a desktop. Office buildings with shared power may have brief outages when generators switch over, so do not update in the middle of the working day. If your laptop will not start afterwards, we accept laptops by courier from anywhere in India.
A typical case
This is a typical scenario drawn from the kind of case a repair bench sees. An accounts manager starts a BIOS update on a day when the office power is unsteady. The lights flicker, the laptop restarts partway through and then shows a blank screen. A planned update would have been done at home on a steady supply. Backed-up files would mean the problem is only a repair, not a loss of the year's accounts.
When to get help
- A BitLocker recovery screen appears and you have no key.
- The BIOS update was interrupted by a power cut or restart.
- The laptop shows a black screen, no lights, or restarts again and again after an update.
- The update tool reports an error and the laptop now behaves differently.
Please do not keep restarting it. Our BIOS repair and update service handles failed updates. In Hyderabad our doorstep service can visit; the fee is ₹149 doorstep visit fee, waived when you approve laptop repair with us. If your BIOS is password locked, see how to enter BIOS on any laptop first.
A note from the LRW Engineer Team
Make the checklist a habit, not a reaction to bad news. Stick a note on the laptop lid with the five steps. Many BIOS updates finish without any fuss, and the ones that do not are exactly where a backup and a saved key save a bad week.
