This post is for Windows 11 owners who read that 26H2 is out, opened Windows Update and found nothing. You will learn why Microsoft releases it in phases, what to check while you wait, how to tell which version you are on, and which shortcuts to avoid. It is written for ordinary users and needs no technical knowledge beyond opening Settings.
Why is Windows 11 26H2 not showing in Windows Update?
Short answer: Windows 11 26H2 became generally available on 29 September 2026, but Microsoft offers it in phases. A phased rollout means the update reaches some PCs first and others later, so your PC may simply not have been offered it yet. Check that Windows Update is not paused, install all pending updates, and wait. You do not need to force it.
Which Windows 11 versions exist right now?
Windows 11 feature updates are named by year and half, such as 25H2. These are the ones owners ask about.
Microsoft describes 26H2 as an enablement package, which means a small update that switches on features already delivered to your PC. Details are on Microsoft's Windows 11 26H2 release information page.
What about 26H1 and 24H2?
26H1 confuses many people. It is a separate release for new Snapdragon X2 laptops only. If you own an Intel or AMD laptop, or an older Arm one, you will not be offered it, and there is no direct upgrade from it to 26H2. That is not a fault on your PC.
24H2 matters for a different reason. Windows 11 24H2 on Home and Pro stops getting updates on 13 October 2026. If you are on 24H2, keep Windows Update running and install the offer when it arrives, because security updates matter more than being first.
First, find out which version you have
- Press the Windows key and R, type winver and press Enter.
- Read the Version line, for example 24H2 or 25H2.
- Note it down so you can compare it after the update.
What to check while you wait
- Updates paused. Open Settings, Windows Update and check that Pause updates is off.
- Pending updates. Install everything shown, restart and check again. A feature update is often offered only after the earlier ones are in.
- Disk space. Make sure the system drive has several gigabytes free. Our disk cleanup guide shows safe ways to free space.
- Managed laptops. A laptop from an office or college is often controlled by an IT team, who decide the timing.
- Get the latest updates as soon as they are available. That switch in Windows Update can bring the offer sooner on some PCs. The wording can differ slightly between versions.
What not to do
- Do not download Windows from unofficial sites or use cracked activation tools to jump the queue. These can add malware or break your licence.
- Do not start a feature update without a backup of your important files. Updates go well for many PCs, but if one fails you will be glad of the copy.
- Do not interrupt an update because it looks stuck. Some stages are quiet for a long time.
Large downloads, power cuts and overnight installs
Feature updates are large downloads, and patchy broadband can stall them. Start on a steady connection, not a mobile hotspot, and keep the laptop on its charger. A power cut during the install stage is a real risk, because the laptop can be left unable to start. If you have frequent cuts, a desktop should sit on a UPS (a small battery backup), and a laptop should begin with a full battery. Also remember that your PC may be offered the update on a night you are asleep; leave it plugged in.
When to get help
- Windows Update shows the same error every time you check.
- The update starts, then rolls back, then repeats.
- The laptop restarts again and again and never reaches the desktop.
- You want a clean Windows installation instead of waiting.
Our Windows installation and repair service covers these. If the laptop is stuck in a loop, see our boot loop guide. In Hyderabad we can visit you through our doorstep service. The charge is ₹149 doorstep visit fee, waived when you approve laptop repair with us.
A note from the LRW Engineer Team
Being offered 26H2 a few weeks later than a friend is normal and costs you nothing. The useful things to do now are small ones: copy your important files to a drive or cloud folder, confirm your Windows version, and keep updates running. If your PC is on 24H2, make sure the updates installed before 13 October.
