Why a fresh Windows 11 install fixes “slow laptop” problems
Short answer: Over years of use, Windows accumulates startup programs, background services, registry clutter, and broken software fragments that cumulatively slow boot times and daily responsiveness. A fresh install removes all of it in one step. For laptops that originally shipped with Windows and have been in use for two or more years, a clean reinstall on a modern NVMe SSD is the single most cost-effective performance upgrade available — often more impactful than adding RAM. The process takes under an hour with the right preparation.
How to do a fresh Windows 11 install in India
Step 1: Back up everything first
A fresh install wipes the C: drive completely. Before anything else, back up all files from your Desktop, Documents, Downloads, and any other folders you use. Export browser bookmarks from Chrome or Edge (Settings → Bookmarks → Export). Note down serial numbers or licence keys for any paid software (Tally ERP, Adobe, Office, antivirus). Copy app data that may be stored outside standard folders — WhatsApp Desktop chat history, for example, lives at C:\Users\[Name]\AppData\Roaming\WhatsApp. An external drive or even a large USB stick handles this backup well.
Also check your Windows activation status before the install. Press Win + I, go to System → Activation. If it shows “Windows is activated with a digital licence linked to your Microsoft account”, your licence will survive the reinstall automatically. If you are running an unactivated or pirated copy, you will need to purchase a genuine key after the install.
Step 2: Download the genuine Windows 11 ISO from Microsoft
Go to microsoft.com/en-in/software-download/windows11 on any working computer. This is Microsoft's official page — the download is free, legal, and the same file that ships with new laptops. Click “Download Windows 11 Disk Image (ISO)”. Select your language (English India) and download. The file is approximately 5.4 GB. A stable broadband connection completes it in 20–40 minutes depending on speed.
In cities where broadband is intermittent or very slow — a common situation in tier-2 and tier-3 cities across India — consider downloading at a co-working space or asking a friend with faster internet. The ISO file can be copied to a USB drive and carried; you do not need internet access during the actual installation.
Step 3: Make a bootable USB with Rufus
Download Rufus (free, from rufus.ie) on the same computer you used for the ISO. You need a USB drive of at least 8 GB — the drive will be completely wiped in this process. Open Rufus, select the USB device from the dropdown, click “Select” and choose the Windows 11 ISO file you downloaded. Leave all other settings at default. Click “Start”. Rufus will ask whether to bypass the Windows 11 TPM (Trusted Platform Module — a hardware security chip) and RAM checks for incompatible hardware — do not tick these boxes on a modern laptop as they disable security features and Windows Update. The USB creation takes about 8–12 minutes.
Step 4: Boot from USB and install
Plug the Rufus-prepared USB into the laptop. Restart and enter the boot menu — the key varies by brand: HP is usually F9, Dell is F12, Lenovo is F12, Asus is Esc or F8, Acer is F12. Select the USB drive from the boot menu. Windows Setup loads in 1–2 minutes.
When prompted, choose “Custom: Install Windows only (advanced)”, not the “Upgrade” option. Select the partition where Windows is currently installed (usually Drive 0 Partition 2, labelled as the primary partition). Click “Format” on that partition, then “Next”. Windows copies files, expands, installs features, and restarts several times. The total process takes 30–45 minutes on a modern NVMe SSD (the M.2 type found in Intel 12th/13th-gen era laptops). On an older spinning HDD (hard disk drive), expect 60–90 minutes.
Step 5: Activation — genuine vs. pirated keys in India
After installation, Windows may show as unactivated. The fastest check: if the laptop originally shipped with Windows (most HP, Dell, Lenovo, Asus, Acer laptops bought from authorised Indian retailers), the OEM key (a licence key embedded in the BIOS during manufacturing) will activate automatically once you connect to the internet. No purchase needed.
If activation does not happen automatically, you need a key. The Microsoft Store India sells Windows 11 Home at approximately ₹7,899 and Windows 11 Home N at ₹7,299 (prices vary). A common workaround seen across Indian tech channels is purchasing “retail keys” at ₹2,500–₹4,500 from local vendors or platforms like Flipkart. These are volume licence keys or stolen OEM keys, not retail licences. Microsoft deactivates them in periodic batches. When deactivation hits, your laptop shows a watermark, loses personalisation features, and most critically, stops receiving security updates from Windows Update. The security gap is the real cost — unpatched Windows is the entry point for the vast majority of malware, ransomware, and keyloggers. If the general service includes a Windows reinstall at your workshop, ask to confirm the activation method before the job is completed.
When to call a professional for Windows 11 installation in India
When DIY ends
Call a technician if: the laptop cannot boot from USB (possible BIOS lock or Secure Boot configuration issue); the install fails with a blue screen error during file copying (this often points to a failing HDD or bad RAM); the laptop does not meet Windows 11 hardware requirements and you are unsure about the TPM workaround risk; or you need to reinstall all standard software alongside Windows. The OS installation service includes driver reinstallation, Windows Update completion, and basic software setup.
Typical cost in India
Windows 11 fresh install (labour, no hardware parts): ₹800–₹2,000 at most repair shops. With driver reinstallation and software setup: ₹1,500–₹3,500. Genuine Windows activation key (if needed): ₹2,500–₹4,500 for a volume key (with deactivation risk) or ₹7,500+ for a retail licence. Visit the complete Windows reinstall guide for the full driver and software checklist, and the Windows slow after update guide if your speed issue appeared after a specific Windows Update rather than gradual accumulation.
A note from the LRW Engineer Team
Two mistakes we see on nearly every pirated-Windows reinstall that comes to our bench: no Windows Update run after install (the laptop is unpatched for months), and no driver installation (touchpad, audio, or Wi-Fi not working because the generic Windows drivers do not match the specific chipset). A fresh install done right takes a full afternoon, not 45 minutes. The extra time is driver downloads, Windows Update cycles, and software reinstallation. If you need it done quickly and correctly, bring it in and we will handle it same-day at the doorstep service.
