Why WhatsApp Desktop shows a stuck or spinning QR code in India
Short answer: WhatsApp Desktop generates QR codes by combining a session token with a timestamp. If the laptop's clock is even a few minutes ahead or behind the correct IST time — or if the local WhatsApp cache contains a stale session from a previous login — the QR is generated but immediately invalid, causing the app to display a permanent loading spinner. Clearing the WhatsApp cache and syncing the Windows clock fixes the QR stuck issue in the overwhelming majority of cases and takes less than 5 minutes.
How to fix WhatsApp Desktop QR code stuck in India
Step 1: Sync the Windows clock to the correct IST time
Right-click the time in the Windows taskbar → "Adjust date/time" → toggle "Set time automatically" off and then on again, or click "Sync now". The clock should synchronise within seconds via Microsoft's NTP (Network Time Protocol) servers. If "Sync now" fails with an error, open Command Prompt as Administrator and run: w32tm /resync /force. WhatsApp Desktop is extremely sensitive to clock drift — even a 3-minute difference between the laptop clock and actual IST causes the QR token to be rejected by WhatsApp's servers as expired on arrival. Step 2: Clear the WhatsApp Desktop cache and AppData
Fully quit WhatsApp Desktop (right-click the system tray icon → Exit, not just close the window). Then press Win + R and type %AppData%\WhatsApp and press Enter. Delete all files and folders inside except the "Backups" subfolder. Then navigate to %LocalAppData%\WhatsApp and delete the "Cache" subfolder. This removes the corrupted session state and local QR cache. Restart WhatsApp Desktop — a fresh QR code should appear within 5–10 seconds. On macOS, the equivalent path is ~/Library/Application Support/WhatsApp (find it via Finder → Go → Library after holding Option).
Step 3: Remove the device from WhatsApp Linked Devices on the phone and re-add
On your phone's WhatsApp: tap the three-dot menu (or Settings on iPhone) → Linked Devices → find the laptop entry → tap it → Log Out. This removes the stale device token from WhatsApp's servers. Then open WhatsApp Desktop on the laptop — it will show a fresh QR screen because the previous token has been revoked. Scan the new QR immediately at full screen brightness. WhatsApp Linked Devices allows up to 4 devices to be linked simultaneously — if you are at the 4-device limit, log out an old device before adding the laptop.
Step 4: The India angle — CMOS battery drain and ISP DNS causing recurring QR failures
On Indian laptops that are 3–5 years old, the CMOS battery (a small coin-shaped battery on the motherboard — CR2032, about the size of a ₹1 coin — that maintains the real-time clock when the laptop is powered off) often drains. When it does, the laptop clock resets to a past date every time the laptop is powered on from a fully discharged state. This causes WhatsApp QR to fail every time after a long shutdown. If you notice the date resetting repeatedly, the CMOS battery needs replacement — a ₹200–₹500 repair.
