This guide is for a designer, photographer or studio owner in India who runs a 27-inch iMac from 2020 or a 2019 Mac Pro and has just seen that macOS 27 will not install on it. Nothing is broken, and no deadline has hit your desk. You will learn what the news means, what to check this week, and how to choose between staying, replacing or reassigning the machine.
My Intel iMac or 2019 Mac Pro is not supported by macOS 27. What now?
Short answer: Nothing stops working today. macOS 27 Golden Gate, released on 14 September 2026, runs only on Apple silicon Macs, and it drops the 2020 27-inch iMac and the 2019 Mac Pro. Your Mac stays on macOS 26 Tahoe, the last version for Intel Macs. Keep working, make a backup, and plan the next step without hurry.
What exactly changed?
macOS 27 needs an Apple silicon chip (the M-series chips Apple designs itself, as opposed to Intel processors). The latest Tahoe release is 26.7, which came out on 14 September 2026. Apple's security-updates page shows what Tahoe is still receiving, so check it instead of relying on rumours.
Option 1: Stay on Tahoe
For many studios this is the right answer for now. Your Mac keeps running the software you already use. Before you rely on it, do these three things:
- Open System Settings, General, Software Update, and install the latest Tahoe update. The wording can differ slightly between versions.
- Check each important program (design, video, accounting, printer software) on its maker's website for the Tahoe versions it supports.
- Keep one backup with Time Machine (Apple's built-in backup) and another on a separate external drive.
Do not skip the Tahoe update or the backup on the grounds that the Mac is old. Over time, newer versions of third-party software may stop supporting Tahoe. That is a common trigger for replacing an old Mac, and your software makers will tell you when.
Option 2: Replace with an Apple silicon Mac
If your work needs the newest software or you want a machine that gets macOS 27, choose from the current line. The iMac is still on the M4 chip (an update is expected this fall but has not shipped). The Mac mini now has the M6 and M5 Pro chips and the Mac Studio has M5 Max and M5 Ultra, both on sale from 22 September 2026. For India prices, see the Apple India store. A 2019 Mac Pro owner should take care here. Internal PCIe cards (add-in boards inside the tower) and special storage may not move across to a smaller Mac. List every card, drive and device you use, and check with each maker before buying.
Option 3: Keep the old Mac for lighter jobs
An unsupported but working Mac is still useful for scanning, printing, file storage, reference work or a client display. Keep it off risky browsing, and do not sign in to banking on it once updates stop. Do not erase or reinstall macOS on an Intel Mac until you have checked your backup opens correctly. Looking after an older Mac in Indian conditions
Many studios here run old, well-looked-after machines for years, which is a fair choice. Dust, humidity and voltage dips are common ageing factors, so give the Mac a UPS (a small battery backup) and clean the vents. A fan that suddenly runs loud, or a screen that dims by itself, is worth looking at early, before it grows into a larger problem. We accept Macs by courier from anywhere in India.

- You want to move years of project files to a new Mac without losing anything.
- The old Mac has become slow, noisy or hot and you want to know if a repair is worth it.
- Time Machine reports errors or your external drive is not recognised.
- You cannot tell whether a Mac Pro card will work on a new machine.
