Your HP Pavilion 15 has a cracked screen. A quote arrives, and it is not clear whether it means a new panel or a whole new lid with hinges. The two are different jobs with different parts and costs. This post explains the difference in plain words, what an HP Care Pack may cover, what an independent repair can check before quoting, and how to decide. What is the difference between the panel and the full assembly?
The panel is the thin screen itself, the layer that lights up and shows the picture. The lid assembly is the whole top half of the laptop: the panel, the plastic or metal cover around it, the hinges that let the lid open, and the cable that carries the picture to the board. Replacing only the panel is the smaller job. Replacing the assembly is the larger job, and it makes sense when more than the glass is damaged.
Short answer: check HP warranty or accidental-damage cover first. If none applies, have the lid, hinges and cable inspected, and choose the panel-only repair when they are sound. Choose the full assembly when the lid is bent, the hinges are loose or the cable is damaged. Ask for the scope in writing before you approve.
What can HP's own plans cover?
HP India describes Care Packs for laptops, desktops, printers and business PCs. The options include next-business-day onsite hardware support, advanced exchange (a replacement sent before your faulty unit is collected), and accidental damage protection that covers spills, drops and falls. Coverage is mainly for two to three years, with post-warranty extensions of up to one year for devices you already own. HP's Care Pack buying guide lists these options. Not every laptop has a plan, and the standard warranty does not cover accidental damage unless that cover was added. Look at your invoice and plan documents. What does an independent repair check before quoting?

Dust, bag pressure and the college commute
Screens often crack from pressure rather than a fall: a laptop slipped into a crowded bag on a train or bus, with a charger or a book pressing on the lid. Dust and grit between the keyboard and the screen can also press a mark into the glass when the lid is closed. Use a padded sleeve, keep the charger on the side and clean the keyboard before closing the lid. If the screen is already cracked, do not carry the laptop in a tight bag, because the crack can spread and the hinges can bend. When is HP's coverage the better route?
Use HP first if the Pavilion is within warranty, if you hold a Care Pack with accidental damage protection, or if HP names a programme that applies to your model. Read the plan's own terms for what counts as accidental damage and how a claim is made. Read the plan's terms and decide on any claim before anyone opens the lid, so you do not lose cover by accident. If no plan applies, an independent repair is a reasonable choice.
