Two motherboard repair paths — chip-level vs full swap

When a laptop motherboard stops working, engineers take one of two routes. The first is chip-level repair (also called component-level repair): the technician traces the fault to a specific failed component — a power-section MOSFET, a charging IC (the chip that manages battery charging), an embedded controller (EC) chip, a BGA-mounted GPU, or a cluster of surface-mount capacitors — and replaces only that part. This requires a microscope, a schematic, a BGA rework station, and a stocked drawer of common laptop ICs. The board goes back in unchanged except for the one swapped component.

The second route is a full board swap: the entire motherboard is removed and replaced with an OEM-spec or equivalent refurbished board. No micro-soldering is involved. The new board is fitted, the laptop is tested, and the job is done in a few hours if the part is in stock. The catch is cost — a replacement board costs two to five times more than a single failed IC, and for MacBooks, the gap is even wider.

Chip-level repair costs one-third to one-fifth of a full board swap. On a ₹22,000 HP OMEN board, the same charging IC fault costs ₹5,500–8,000 at chip level.

Chip-level is the right call when: a single IC has failed, the board traces are clean, the laptop is under 6 years old, and the customer wants to preserve existing data without a reinstall. Full swap is the right call when: multiple ICs have failed (common in multi-area liquid damage with no quick response), the PCB is physically burnt or cracked, previous repair attempts have lifted pads or delaminated layers, or BGA cracks are widespread beyond economic re-balling. Chip-level vs full swap — how to choose the right path

The most common mistake customers make is assuming a non-functional laptop means a dead motherboard means a board swap. In practice, roughly seven in ten motherboard failures trace to a single component, not the whole board. Here is how to frame the decision before the diagnostic confirms it.

Chip-level is the right call when: the laptop stopped working after a specific event (power surge, charging fault, one liquid spill that was addressed within hours); the symptom is consistent and predictable (always no-power, always no-display, always battery not charging — not random crashing); the laptop is under 6 years old and not physically damaged; and data preservation is important (chip-level leaves your storage drive intact and in place).

Full board swap is the right call when: a previous repair attempt has lifted PCB pads or delaminated layers; there is visible burn damage or carbonised traces on the board; multiple systems have failed simultaneously (power + display + USB, all at once, often from multi-zone liquid damage left overnight); BGA cracks are widespread across multiple chips; or a discontinued model’s board ICs are no longer manufactured, making chip-level sourcing impossible. In these cases we say so clearly and quote a swap, or if no swap board is available, confirm the laptop is beyond economic repair under No Fix, No Fee.

Data is almost always safer with chip-level — the storage drive never needs to be reinstalled or migrated. With a board swap, OS and data survive on the original drive if storage was intact. Either way, we remove and hand back the drive before any board work.

For MacBook M-series owners, chip-level is almost always the preferred route because the entire system — CPU, GPU, unified memory (RAM), and SSD controller — is integrated onto one logic board. A full board swap at ₹45,000–95,000 is an enormous cost on a machine whose out-of-warranty refurb value is often only slightly higher. A charging IC fault on the same board costs ₹8,500–15,000 at chip level. The arithmetic is clear.

This session alone — not the repair — tells you with high confidence whether the board is chip-level fixable, needs a full swap, or is beyond economic repair.
