Should an Indian professional switch from Windows to Mac?
Short answer: For most Indian professionals — in finance, design, media, IT, education, and business — switching to a MacBook with Apple Silicon is worth doing. What to check before switching
Step 1: Audit your critical software
Before buying a MacBook, list every application you use daily. For most Indian professionals, the compatibility picture is positive: Microsoft Office 365 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams) has a fully-featured Mac version. Adobe Creative Cloud — Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere Pro — runs natively on Apple Silicon. Google Chrome and Firefox are identical across platforms. WhatsApp Desktop is available. Step 3: Learn the key differences
The adjustment period for most Indian Windows users is 1–2 weeks. The keyboard shortcuts are different (Command replaces Ctrl for Copy/Paste/Undo), the right-click behaviour requires a setting change in System Settings, and the dock replaces the Windows taskbar. The Finder (macOS's file manager, equivalent to Windows Explorer) has a different folder hierarchy — Downloads, Documents, Desktop, and iCloud Drive work as expected, but the concept of a C: drive does not exist. macOS does not require antivirus software in the way Windows does — the OS's built-in security (Gatekeeper and XProtect) handles the vast majority of threats without third-party software, which itself reduces the ongoing software cost.
