What is the best way to transfer files from Windows to Mac?
Short answer: Use Apple's Migration Assistant for a complete one-time data migration when switching to a new MacBook. For selective file transfers, a USB drive formatted as exFAT or a shared network folder over SMB works well. Cloud storage (Google Drive, OneDrive) is the easiest option for files already online. Never format the transfer drive as NTFS — Macs read NTFS but cannot write without paid software.
How to transfer files from Windows to Mac
Step 1: Use Migration Assistant for a complete switch
If you are moving from a Windows laptop to a new MacBook, Migration Assistant (Applications → Utilities → Migration Assistant on macOS) handles the entire process. Download Windows Migration Assistant from apple.com/migrate-to-mac on the Windows laptop. Both machines must be on the same Wi-Fi network. Run the wizard on both simultaneously — the Mac will find the Windows PC, let you choose what to migrate (documents, music, photos, email, contacts, calendar), and copy everything over Wi-Fi. For large data sets (100 GB+), use a wired Ethernet connection or USB cable connection via a dock for much faster speeds. Plan for 1–3 hours for a full migration on a typical Indian broadband connection.
Step 2: USB drive transfer (exFAT format)
For selective file transfer, a USB drive or external SSD works reliably without needing both machines on the same network. The key requirement: format the drive as exFAT (Extended File Allocation Table — a cross-platform format readable and writable by both Windows and macOS). On Windows: press Windows + X → Disk Management, right-click the drive, Format → File System: exFAT. Copy files from Windows to the drive, then plug into the Mac and copy to a destination folder. exFAT has no file size limit and handles files larger than 4 GB that FAT32 cannot.
Step 3: Network sharing via SMB
For ongoing file access between two machines on the same network, enable network sharing. On Windows: Control Panel → Network and Sharing Centre → Advanced sharing settings → Turn on file and printer sharing. Right-click the folder you want to share, Properties → Sharing → Share. Note the Windows PC's IP address (run ipconfig in Command Prompt). On Mac: open Finder → Go → Connect to Server, type smb://[Windows-IP-address], press Connect, and enter Windows credentials. The folder appears as a network drive in Finder.
Step 4: The India angle — slow internet and cloud alternatives
India's home broadband speeds (typically 50–200 Mbps on fiber) make cloud-based transfer practical for most data volumes. Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive, and iCloud Drive all work across platforms. Upload files to cloud storage from Windows, then download on Mac — this is the simplest method if the files are already partially in the cloud. For larger local data transfers without cloud dependency, a USB-C external SSD (available at IT markets for ₹3,000–₹7,000 for 500 GB) is the fastest physical method. Read our SSD clone guide if the goal is moving the entire Windows installation, and our data recovery service page if files are missing or inaccessible before transfer.

When DIY ends
Seek professional help if: the Windows drive is partially failing (slow read speeds, clicking sounds) and data needs to be recovered before transfer, the Mac is not booting during migration, or files show corruption after transfer.
Typical cost in India
Professional data migration service (Windows to Mac, in-store): ₹800–₹2,000. Data recovery from failing Windows drive before migration: ₹2,000–₹8,000 depending on severity. Doorstep diagnosis: ₹149, No Fix No Fee.
A note from the LRW Engineer Team
The Migration Assistant approach copies data, not Windows applications. Microsoft Office, Adobe tools, and other software need to be re-installed from the Mac App Store or from the vendor's website as Mac versions — the Windows installer files (.exe) will not run on macOS. Plan for re-installation time when switching platforms.
