What is Windows 11 24H2 Quick Machine Recovery?
Short answer: Quick Machine Recovery (QMR) is a Windows 11 24H2 feature that automatically tries to fix a laptop that cannot boot after a bad update. When Windows fails to start three times in a row, it enters the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE — the blue troubleshoot screen). If QMR is enabled and the laptop has internet access, WinRE contacts Microsoft’s servers, downloads a targeted remediation package for the specific bad update, applies it, and reboots — ideally without touching your user data. Think of it as a self-healing mechanism for the most common type of boot failure: update gone wrong.
How to enable and use Quick Machine Recovery
Step 1: Enable it before you need it
Open Settings → System → Recovery. Under Recovery options, look for Quick Machine Recovery and toggle it on. This option only appears on Windows 11 24H2 or later. If you do not see it, run Windows Update first. On devices managed by a corporate IT team (Intune, Group Policy), the admin can push this via MDM policy so it is on by default for all company laptops — a significant IT support cost reducer.
Step 2: What happens during an automatic recovery
After three consecutive failed boots, Windows automatically enters WinRE. If QMR is enabled, you will see a message like Attempting automatic repair or Trying to fix your PC. The process needs Wi-Fi or ethernet access at this point. If your home Wi-Fi does not appear in the list, plug in a USB-to-ethernet adapter with a wired internet connection, or create a mobile hotspot from your phone. Recovery downloads are usually 100–500 MB and take 3–10 minutes on a reasonable connection. If successful, the laptop reboots normally with the bad update removed or patched.
Step 3: If QMR cannot download or fails to fix
If the recovery server has no fix for your specific failure (which can happen with very new updates not yet catalogued), QMR will fall back to the standard WinRE menu. Do not reach for Reset this PC immediately — that option deletes everything. Instead, go to Advanced options → Command Prompt and run two commands in sequence:
sfc /scannow (System File Checker — repairs corrupted Windows system files using cached copies)
dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth (DISM — Deployment Image Servicing and Management — repairs the Windows component store by downloading fresh copies from Windows Update)
After both finish, type exit and restart. This combination resolves the majority of software-only boot failures that QMR could not automatically address.
Step 4: The India context — power cuts and update failures
The most common scenario we see in India where QMR becomes relevant: a Windows Update is mid-installation, the power cuts out (common in many Indian cities during peak summer), and the update is left in a partial state that prevents booting. For laptops on battery, the built-in battery handles the same role as a UPS — Windows Update will not proceed on battery below 20% precisely to avoid this scenario.

If QMR runs, SFC and DISM both complete without errors, and the laptop still will not boot, the issue is likely a physically failing SSD, a BCD (Boot Configuration Data) corruption too deep for the standard tools, or a corrupted bootloader. These require specialist tools. Do not attempt a factory reset until you have confirmed your data is backed up — or until we have recovered it.
