Why your USB4 laptop underperforms with most cables
Short answer: A USB-C connector does not guarantee USB4 speed. The same physical plug carries everything from USB 2.0 (480 Mbps) to Thunderbolt 5 (80 Gbps). Plugging a standard phone-charging cable into a Snapdragon X Elite or Intel Lunar Lake (Intel Core Ultra 200V) port caps your transfer rate at 480 Mbps — about 170 times slower than the port is capable of. The cable is the bottleneck, not the laptop.
How to identify and choose the right cable
Step 1: Know what your port actually supports
Snapdragon X Elite (Qualcomm QX8 Elite) laptops ship with USB4 Gen 3x2 (40 Gbps) ports. Intel Lunar Lake (Core Ultra 200V) ships with Thunderbolt 4 or Thunderbolt 5 depending on the SKU — check the spec sheet for a lightning-bolt icon next to the port. Thunderbolt 5 is Intel's latest standard and reaches 80 Gbps in Bandwidth Boost mode. If your port shows a single lightning bolt, it is TB4 (40 Gbps). Two lightning bolts mean TB5.
A quick way to verify on Windows: Device Manager → Universal Serial Bus controllers. If you see "Thunderbolt 5" or "USB4 Host Router" in the list, you have a high-bandwidth port. The cable must match it.
Step 2: Read the cable spec — what to look for
USB4 Gen 3x2 cables carry the USB4 40Gbps logo — a small badge showing "40Gbps" next to the USB trident. Thunderbolt 5 cables carry Intel's TB5 badge and must be certified by Intel. At cable lengths over 0.8 m, passive USB4 cables lose signal integrity, so any cable longer than 80 cm should be an active cable (it has a small chip inside the connector that boosts signal). Active cables cost more but are essential for desk setups where the port is far from the dock or monitor.
Also verify power delivery: for laptop charging, the cable must be rated for at least 60 W PD (Power Delivery). Cables rated 240 W (USB PD 3.1 EPR) future-proof you for the next generation of docks. In India, Anker, Belkin, and Ugreen print the certified wattage and speed on the cable body — check before you buy.
Step 3: Price reality in India
As of writing, certified USB4 40Gbps cables (0.5 m, passive) start around ₹600–₹1,200 on major Indian e-commerce platforms. Thunderbolt 5 certified cables (0.8 m active) typically run ₹3,000–₹4,500. Step 4: The India angle — heat and connector oxidation
Indian summers push ambient temperatures above 40°C in many cities. Active USB4 cables contain a small signal-conditioning chip; that chip runs warm under load. In a poorly ventilated desk setup during summer, some cheap active cables fail within months because the chip overheats. Buy from brands that publish operating temperature specs (minimum 60°C ambient tolerance). We also see connector oxidation in humid coastal cities — keep connectors dry and periodically clean them with a dry brush. A corroded USB4 connector can cause intermittent 10 Gbps negotiation instead of 40 Gbps, which looks like a port fault but is actually the cable.

If you have tried a certified cable and your USB4 port still negotiates at USB 3.2 speeds, the port controller chip may have an issue. Other signs: the port gets unusually hot even with no device plugged in, the connector feels loose or wiggles, or Windows shows a "USB device malfunctioned" error on a known-good device. These are hardware faults — stop and get a diagnosis.
