Why most USB-C docks disappoint Copilot+ PC owners
Short answer: Copilot+ PCs — laptops running Snapdragon X Elite / Plus or Intel Lunar Lake with NPU performance above 40 TOPS — need docks that speak USB4 or Thunderbolt 4/5 fluently. A cheap HDMI 2.0 dock bought for an older laptop will technically connect but will cap your 4K screen at 60Hz, fail to pass through enough charging power, and on Snapdragon machines may drop connection entirely because its driver is x86-only. Getting the right dock saves hours of troubleshooting.
How to pick the right USB-C dock for Copilot+ PCs
Step 1: Match dock input standard to laptop port
Snapdragon X Elite ships with USB4 Gen 3x2 (40 Gbps) ports. Intel Lunar Lake ships with Thunderbolt 4 or Thunderbolt 5 depending on OEM. Your dock's upstream port (the port that plugs into the laptop) must match or be backward-compatible. A Thunderbolt 4 dock works on USB4 ports at USB4 speeds. A Thunderbolt 5 dock unlocks 80 Gbps bandwidth for driving three monitors simultaneously. On Snapdragon X, a Thunderbolt 4 dock works but a Thunderbolt 5 dock is overkill — the port maxes at USB4 40 Gbps.
Rule of thumb: USB4 40 Gbps dock for Snapdragon X, Thunderbolt 4 dock for Lunar Lake basic, Thunderbolt 5 dock for Lunar Lake with TB5 port. Never buy a dock that only says "USB-C 3.1" — that tops at 10 Gbps and will bottleneck everything.
Step 2: Verify HDMI 2.1 and DP 2.1 — not just "4K support"
HDMI 2.1 on a dock means the HDMI output can drive 4K @ 120Hz or 8K @ 30Hz. Most docks below ₹5,000 still use HDMI 2.0 chips, which top out at 4K @ 60Hz. For gaming monitors or high-refresh-rate 4K displays, HDMI 2.1 is the minimum. DisplayPort 2.1 (DP 2.1) on a dock delivers up to 77.4 Gbps — enough for 8K @ 60Hz or multiple 4K 144Hz monitors. Check the dock's spec sheet for "HDMI 2.1" and "DP 2.1" explicitly. "Supports 4K" with no version number means HDMI 2.0 at best.

Step 3: ARM driver compatibility for Snapdragon X
This is the most common trap. Many dock chipsets — particularly generic VL812, GL3510, and some Realtek variants — have historically shipped x86-only Windows drivers. On a Snapdragon X machine running Windows on ARM (WoA), these docks either show as unrecognised devices or work partially with no video output. Before buying, check the manufacturer's website for an "ARM Windows" or "Windows on ARM" driver. Anker, CalDigit, and newer Baseus models explicitly list Snapdragon X / ARM compatibility. If the dock's page makes no mention of ARM, assume it is x86-only.
Step 4: Power delivery through the dock
A good USB-C dock passes through charging power so your laptop charges while docked. Look for a dock with at least 96 W pass-through PD — this supports most 15” Windows laptops and MacBook Pro 14”. The dock itself typically needs its own power adapter (included) to supply this. If the dock is bus-powered (no separate adapter), its PD pass-through will be limited to 15–27 W — enough to slow-charge a thin ultrabook but not a gaming-class machine. Copilot+ gaming machines like Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 Snapdragon variant draw up to 140 W — that dock needs a dedicated power adapter.

If your USB-C port delivers no video signal to any dock despite confirmed ARM-compatible firmware, the laptop's USB-C port controller may have a hardware fault. Signs: port gets very hot with the dock plugged in, dock works on a different laptop but not yours, or Windows Device Manager shows a yellow exclamation on the USB4 host controller.

We get at least three calls a week from Snapdragon X laptop owners who bought a cheap dock that "doesn't work." In almost every case the dock is x86-only — it is not a laptop fault. Check driver compatibility first. If the dock works on any Windows laptop in your home but fails on the Snapdragon machine, the dock is ARM-incompatible, not the laptop.
