This guide is for anyone running Windows 11 24H2 or 25H2 on a laptop or desktop who wants to move to the newest version, 26H2, without drama. By the end you will know which version your PC runs, where to look for the update, why it may not appear yet, and what to prepare so a power cut or a slow connection does not turn a routine update into a problem. No technical background needed.
How do I get Windows 11 26H2 on my PC?
Short answer: Open Settings, go to Windows Update and choose Check for updates. Microsoft started offering 26H2 on 29 September 2026 in phases, so your PC may not be offered it on day one. If it appears, choose Download and install, keep the charger plugged in and let it finish. If it does not appear, wait and check again in a few days.
Which version of Windows 11 do I have?
Windows 11 comes in yearly versions with names like 24H2 and 25H2 (the number is the year, and H2 means the second half). To read yours:
- Press the Windows key and R together.
- Type winver and press Enter.
- Read the line that says Version, for example 24H2 or 25H2.
Now compare it with the dates below.
Microsoft keeps these dates on its Windows 11 Home and Pro lifecycle page. Enterprise and Education editions follow a longer schedule, so a work laptop managed by an office IT team may differ.
How does the 26H2 update arrive?
26H2 is delivered as an enablement package. That means a small update that switches on features already sent to your PC earlier, instead of a full re-install. It can install faster than a big yearly upgrade. It is also phased, which means Microsoft offers it to groups of PCs over time rather than to everyone at once.
Whether a 24H2 PC is offered 26H2 straight away or only after another update can differ from machine to machine. Windows Update shows what it offers for yours, so follow what it shows and do not guess.
Steps to check and install
Step 1: Make a copy of your important files

Step 2: Check for updates
Go to Settings, then Windows Update, and select Check for updates. Install anything waiting first and restart. If 26H2 appears as a feature update, choose Download and install. The wording can differ slightly between versions.
Step 3: Leave the PC alone while it runs
Do not switch the laptop off or pull the plug while the update says Working on updates or Restarting. The screen may go black or restart several times. That is normal. Wait until the sign-in screen returns.
Step 4: Confirm the new version
Run winver again and check that it now shows 26H2. Open your main work applications once to confirm they start.
What if 26H2 is not showing yet?
- Check that Windows Update is not paused. Look for a Resume updates button on the Windows Update page.
- Check again after a few days. A phased rollout reaches machines in turns.
- Install all ordinary updates first. Sometimes the feature update only appears after those.
- Do not use download tools, registry tricks or ISO files from forums to force the update. They can leave a PC with missing drivers, and some are unsafe to run.

Power cuts and slow broadband during updates
Two things decide how smooth an update is here. The first is power: a voltage dip or a cut during a restart is a frequent cause of a damaged update, so keep the charger connected and use a UPS (a small battery backup) with a desktop. The second is broadband: a large update on a weak connection can stall and retry for hours. Start it in the evening on home broadband rather than a mobile hotspot, and do not close the lid halfway through.
When to get help
- The update fails, rolls back and tries again more than twice.
- The laptop restarts in a loop and never reaches the sign-in screen.
- Files, Wi-Fi or sound are missing after the update.
- You are not sure your files are safe and the PC will not open.
