If you use a MacBook for study, accounts or daily work and keep putting off the update pop-up, this guide is for you. You will learn where the automatic update switches are, what each one does, why small updates matter, what to prepare before an update installs, and how to confirm afterwards that your MacBook is up to date. It takes about five minutes.
How do I turn on automatic macOS updates on a MacBook?
Short answer: Open the Apple menu, choose System Settings, then General, then Software Update. Click the info button (the small circled i) beside Automatic updates and switch on the options for checking, downloading and installing updates. Keep the MacBook plugged in and connected to the internet so the updates can install overnight. The menu wording can differ slightly between versions.
What are the exact steps?
Step 1: Open Software Update
Click the Apple logo at the top left of the screen, choose System Settings, then General, then Software Update. The Mac checks for updates and shows anything waiting.
Step 2: Open the automatic options
Click the (i) button next to Automatic updates. A small list of switches appears.
Step 3: Switch on the options
- Check for updates: the Mac looks for new updates by itself.
- Download new updates when available: it fetches them in the background.
- Install macOS updates: it installs them, usually when the Mac is idle and charging.
- Install application updates from the App Store: keeps your apps current.
- Install Security Responses and system files: small protection fixes that need no full update.
Click Done. If you are asked for your Mac password, enter it.
Why do updates arrive so often?
Apple released macOS Tahoe 26.6 on 27 July 2026, with matching updates for older Mac versions on the same day. Then on 17 August 2026 it released Tahoe 26.6.2, a security update whose published notes list dozens of CVEs (CVEs are the public reference numbers for security flaws). Small releases like these happen often, and they close gaps in browsers, graphics, and the system itself. Turning on automatic updates means those fixes reach your MacBook without waiting for you.
On 14 September 2026 Apple released macOS 27 for Apple silicon Macs only. macOS 26 Tahoe is the last version for Intel Macs. Before you agree to a large new version, read our guide on how to back up your Mac before upgrading to macOS 27. To see what is currently available for your Mac, check Apple's security releases page or the Software Update screen itself.
What should I prepare so the update installs?
- Charger plugged in. A MacBook on a low battery may hold the install back.
- Free storage. Large updates need several gigabytes of free space. Delete old downloads or move files to an external drive if the Mac says it needs room.
- A steady connection. Patchy broadband can make a download stall. Leave it to finish overnight rather than restarting it.
- A recent backup. Run Time Machine before any large update.
How do I know the update installed?
Return to System Settings, General, Software Update. It should say your Mac is up to date and show the macOS name. For the exact version number, click the Apple menu and choose About This Mac. Compare it with the latest version listed on Apple's security releases page. If the page lists a newer version, click Update Now.
Power cuts and slow broadband during macOS updates
Voltage dips and power cuts are common in many Indian cities, and an update that loses power halfway can leave a Mac unable to start properly. Do not begin a large install on a nearly empty battery without the charger, and do not shut the lid mid-install. If your broadband is slow, set the Mac to download updates during the night, and keep it near the router. For a long outage, finish the install later rather than interrupting it.
When to get help
Ask a technician if the Mac stays stuck on the Apple logo or a progress bar for hours, restarts in a loop after an update, shows a prohibitory sign, or cannot find enough free space even after clearing files. Our MacBook macOS installation page and the Apple MacBook repair hub explain what we do. We offer doorstep service around Secunderabad and across Hyderabad, and MacBooks can reach us by courier from anywhere in India. ₹149 doorstep visit fee, waived when you approve laptop repair with us. If your MacBook is still under Apple's warranty, Apple's authorised service is the first place to go; we repair Macs that are out of warranty or when you choose independent repair.
A note from the LRW Engineer Team
Automatic updates are a good habit, but they work best with a backup behind them. Connect an external drive and run Time Machine once a week, keep the charger plugged in at night, and do not ignore the Software Update screen for months. Small updates installed regularly are far easier on the Mac than one big jump later.
