If you are a Surface Pro owner who posted the tablet to Microsoft and are still waiting, you may be wondering whether to keep waiting or ask someone nearby for a view. This post explains the timeline Microsoft itself states, how to check your model and coverage, and when a local second opinion is sensible. It will help you decide whether to wait, to ask Microsoft for an update, or to get a second assessment.
Should you keep waiting or get a second opinion?
Short answer: First compare your waiting time with what Microsoft states. If you are within that window, or the Surface is in warranty or under a plan, stay with Microsoft and ask for a status update. If you are out of warranty, past the stated window and need an answer sooner, a local assessment gives you a written view without cancelling anything.
What does Microsoft state about turnaround?
Microsoft's service FAQ, as read on 19 October 2026, says it typically takes 6-8 business days to get your Surface back after you ship it, depending on where you live and barring any inventory or shipping delays. That is a stated estimate, not a promise for every case, and the figure can change, so check the current page. You can read it on Microsoft's service and repair questions page.
For commercial devices under Microsoft's same-unit repair, the page (as read on the same date) says to allow an average of 6-8 days to receive your replacement device, and elsewhere gives an average of 6-12 calendar days depending on location and supply chain. Check the current page. The FAQ also says Microsoft replaces hardware components when faults are found rather than repairing them. For the full detail on your case, ask Microsoft or check its page.
Is your Surface Pro eligible, and is it still covered?
Two checks come first. On Microsoft's same-unit repair page, India is listed with a restriction to specific models, including Surface Pro 11th Edition, Surface Pro 10 and Surface Pro 9. If yours is older, the page does not list it for that route, so ask Microsoft what applies. Second, sign in at your Microsoft account's devices page, choose the device and check coverage. If the device is not listed, register it there.
What can a local second opinion do?
Laptop Repair World, founded in 2007, has one store at MG Road, Secunderabad, and offers doorstep service across Hyderabad. Laptops are also accepted by courier from anywhere in India. The team can assess a Surface Pro fault and give a written quotation listing parts, labour, GST and the visit fee before any work. Each part is named as original, compatible or refurbished, with its own warranty. If testing finds another fault, you approve a revised quote first.
Repair depends on the exact model, the fault and part availability, confirmed only after diagnosis. We do not promise that every Surface can be repaired. A local view is not a verdict on Microsoft's work. It simply tells you what an independent repair would involve, so you can compare it with the stated timeline.
A typical case to picture
This is an illustrative scenario, not a real job. An owner in a smaller city has posted an out-of-warranty Surface Pro whose battery swells and screen lifts. A week passes with no news. The owner checks the stated 6-8 business days, asks Microsoft for an update, and in parallel asks an independent repairer what a local assessment would involve. The comparison decides whether to wait or to switch.
How do heat, dust and courier distance matter in India?
A tablet with a swollen battery may need more careful handling than a routine fault. Courier distance adds days in both directions. A swollen battery is a safety risk, so stop charging and using the device. Ask whoever holds it what they have done about it, and do not post a swollen device in an ordinary parcel without telling the courier or repairer first.
When should you stay with Microsoft, and when look elsewhere?
- Stay with Microsoft if the Surface is under warranty or a protection plan, or while the stated window still holds.
- Ask Microsoft for an update if the stated window has passed. Quote your case number.
- Look for a local assessment if you are out of warranty, the explanation does not match the fault, or you need the device sooner.
Microsoft says everything on a Surface sent to its service centre is erased, and it is not responsible for data loss during servicing, so keep your files backed up elsewhere. Our post on backing up before a repair explains how. For model-specific costs, see Surface Pro screen replacement.
When to get help
- The stated window has passed and you have had no clear update.
- The reason given does not match the fault you reported.
- The device is out of warranty and you need an answer soon.
- You want a written view on a Surface Pro already with you.
Start at our Surface Pro repair page, or see the Microsoft Surface hub. For a doorstep visit in Hyderabad, there is a ₹149 doorstep visit fee, waived when you approve laptop repair with us. No Fix No Fee covers the repair charge, and the visit fee is waived only when you approve the repair.
A note from the LRW Engineer Team
Keep every message and your case number from Microsoft, and note the date you shipped. Ask for written answers on what was found and which parts are needed. A clear record helps you compare, and you can decide calmly whether to wait.
