Microsoft’s authorised Surface service network in India — what actually exists
Microsoft does not operate a dense, city-by-city authorised repair network in India the way Dell (Dell Exclusive Stores), HP (HP Service Centers), or Lenovo (RSPs across 100+ cities) do. Instead, Microsoft authorised Surface service is delivered through a small number of authorised reseller partners and Microsoft Experience Centre locations, concentrated in major metros.
As of 2026, authorised Surface service is available in:
- Mumbai — Microsoft Experience Centre, Infiniti Mall Malad, plus a small number of authorised reseller partners
- Delhi / NCR — Select Partners & Microsoft retail presence in malls
- Bengaluru — Authorised reseller service partners in Koramangala and MG Road clusters
- Hyderabad — Limited authorised service partners in HITEC City and Secunderabad markets
- Chennai, Pune, Kolkata — Typically one to two authorised service points per city
For Tier-2 cities (Jaipur, Lucknow, Kochi, Coimbatore, Indore, and similar), authorised Surface service either does not exist or means travelling to the nearest metro. For Tier-3 cities and towns, there is no authorised Microsoft Surface service option at all.
This coverage gap is one reason why Surface owners across India increasingly turn to specialist independent repair services for out-of-warranty hardware. For a full picture of what we handle, visit our Microsoft Surface repair hub.
When to use Microsoft authorised service
The authorised route is clearly the right call in these specific situations:
- Your Surface is under warranty and the fault is a manufacturing defect. A keyboard that stops working on a six-month-old Surface Laptop without any physical cause, a screen developing dead pixels without impact, a charging port failing on a device that has never been dropped — these are the scenarios the standard 1-year warranty is built to cover, at no charge.
- You purchased Microsoft Complete. Microsoft Complete is Microsoft’s extended warranty with accidental damage protection, available only at the time of device purchase. If you bought it, you have cover for screen cracks and liquid spills (with a service fee per incident). This makes the authorised route genuinely valuable for physical damage repairs during the coverage period.
- You need an official service record. Enterprise and education customers who manage Surface fleets often need repairs logged against the device serial number in Microsoft’s system. The authorised network is the only way to get that documentation.
- The device is under a Microsoft 365 Business plan with hardware benefits. Surface Pro 9, 10, and 11 models on certain Microsoft 365 Business plans may include extended service options — check your subscription terms before paying for an independent repair.
Microsoft Surface warranty — what it covers and what it excludes
Microsoft’s standard limited warranty for Surface in India covers defects in materials and workmanship for one year from the date of purchase. It is narrower than many customers assume.
Covered under standard warranty:
- Hardware malfunctions that arise from manufacturing or material defects
- Software issues caused by defective hardware (e.g., a defective SSD causing Windows to fail)
- Accessories (keyboard, mouse, stylus) within their own warranty periods
Not covered under standard warranty:
- Cracked or broken screens from drops or impacts
- Liquid damage of any kind
- Physical damage to chassis, hinges, or ports from mishandling
- Battery capacity loss through normal use (capacity degradation is not a defect)
- Damage from third-party accessories or unauthorised modifications
- Cosmetic damage (scratches, dents) that does not affect function
One common point of confusion: Surface batteries are not replaceable as a user-serviceable component — the design is sealed and glued. Battery replacement requires professional disassembly regardless of warranty status. A battery that simply holds 65% capacity after two years of normal use is not covered; a battery that stops charging or swells within warranty may be.
Microsoft Complete — what it is and what it means for repairs
Microsoft Complete is Microsoft’s extended warranty and accidental damage protection plan, available as a purchase add-on at the time you buy a new Surface device. It is not available after purchase on its own — if you did not buy it when you purchased the device, you cannot add it later.
Microsoft Complete provides:
- Extension of the hardware warranty by one or two years (depending on the plan tier)
- Accidental damage from handling (ADH) cover — screen cracks from drops, liquid spill damage
- Each accidental damage claim has a service fee (typically in the range of ₹5,000–₹8,000 per incident)
- A limited number of ADH claims per coverage period (usually two per year)
If you have Microsoft Complete and the device is within the coverage period, the authorised service route for physical damage is worth using — the service fee will typically be lower than independent repair costs for the same damage. If the device is out of Microsoft Complete coverage or the plan was never purchased, independent specialist repair is almost always more cost-effective. The BitLocker data risk during Surface motherboard repair
This is the most important technical point Surface owners need to understand before authorising any board-level repair — at an authorised centre or independently.
BitLocker is Windows’ built-in full-disk encryption system. On Surface devices, it is enabled by default when the device is signed in with a Microsoft account or enrolled in an Active Directory / Azure AD / Microsoft Entra domain (enterprise and education accounts). BitLocker encryption keys are tied to the TPM chip (Trusted Platform Module — a dedicated security chip on the motherboard) that was present when BitLocker was activated.
What happens during a motherboard replacement: When a service centre replaces the motherboard, they are also replacing the TPM chip, because the TPM is soldered to the board. On the next boot after repair, Windows detects that the TPM signature has changed — a hardware change it treats as a potential tampering or theft event. It immediately enters BitLocker recovery mode and asks for a 48-digit recovery key before allowing access to the drive.
If you do not have that recovery key, the device will not boot and your data is encrypted and inaccessible. Not even the authorised service centre can override this — BitLocker is specifically designed to be resistant to authorised access without the key. For broader data protection steps during any Surface repair, see our data recovery service page for context on what is and is not recoverable in encryption scenarios.
How to protect yourself:
- Before any repair, go to account.microsoft.com/devices, find your Surface under “Devices”, and look for the BitLocker recovery key listed under the device. Save it in a separate, secure location — not on the device itself.
- If the device is enrolled in a corporate or school Microsoft 365 tenant, the recovery key is held by the IT administrator — contact them before authorising board-level work.
- If BitLocker is not enabled, this risk does not apply. Check under Settings › Privacy & Security › Device encryption.
Any reputable independent service will warn you about BitLocker before touching the board. If a service centre does not mention this risk before a motherboard repair, treat it as a signal about their level of Surface expertise.
ARM-based Surface models — service limitations you need to know
Several Surface models use ARM-based processors rather than Intel x86 chips:
- Surface Pro X (2019–2021) — Microsoft SQ1 and SQ2 (co-developed with Qualcomm)
- Surface Pro 9 5G (2022) — Microsoft SQ3
- Surface Pro 11 (2024) — Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite / Snapdragon X Plus
ARM Surface models present specific repair challenges that Intel Surface variants do not:
- Parts availability. Microsoft has not made component-level motherboard parts widely available for ARM Surface models through any channel, including the authorised network. Screen assemblies can sometimes be sourced from specialist parts suppliers, but the supply chain is thinner than for Intel models.
- Software compatibility. ARM Surface devices run Windows on ARM — not all diagnostic tools and third-party utilities used for Intel laptops run natively on ARM. Technicians need ARM-compatible tools for accurate diagnosis.
- No user RAM or SSD upgrades. ARM Surface models solder both RAM and storage to the motherboard. There are no upgrades available post-purchase. A failed SSD on an ARM Surface Pro often means board-level data recovery is the only option.
- Charging port differences. ARM Surface Pro 9 5G and Surface Pro 11 use USB-C for charging (Surface Connect is absent on some models). USB-C port replacement has a different repair profile than the magnetic Surface Connect port on older Intel models.
If your Surface is an ARM model, independent repair options are more limited than for Intel variants. Screen replacement is generally feasible; motherboard-level work is significantly harder. Contact us via our Microsoft Surface repair page with your specific model before booking, and we will give you an honest assessment of what is achievable.
Surface Connect vs USB-C — charging port repair profiles
Older Surface devices (Surface Pro 3 through Surface Pro 8, Surface Laptop 1 through 4) use the magnetic Surface Connect port for charging. Newer models (Surface Laptop 5 and later, Surface Pro 9 and later) use USB-C, with some models offering both.
Surface Connect port faults (broken connector, bent pins from forceful connection) are generally easier to repair than USB-C port faults on ultra-thin builds because the Surface Connect port has more physical repair access. USB-C port failures on Surface devices, especially models with the port mounted on a flexible daughterboard, can involve more complex disassembly in the sealed chassis.
Type Cover (Surface Pro keyboard) and Surface Pro Flex Keyboard accessories are replaced as complete units — they are not repaired at component level. If your Type Cover or Flex Keyboard has failing keys, a torn hinge, or a damaged connector, the repair path is accessory replacement, not board repair.
What an independent specialist offers for Surface repair
A qualified independent Surface repair service offers several advantages over the authorised route for out-of-warranty devices:
- Assembly-level screen replacement at significantly lower cost. Surface screen assemblies are available through specialist parts channels. A qualified independent service can replace the display assembly — screen, digitiser, and glass as a unit — for roughly half to two-thirds of the Microsoft authorised cost. The assembly quality from reputable parts channels is equivalent to the OEM assembly for most repairs.
- Sealed battery replacement. Surface batteries are glued and not user-replaceable, but specialist services with the right tools (heat guns for adhesive softening, proper spudgers and pry tools) can replace Surface batteries safely without screen damage. This is labour-intensive work and the cost reflects that.
- Faster turnaround. Independent specialist services typically complete screen and battery replacements in 3–7 working days. Authorised Surface service in India, which routes parts through the official supply chain, routinely takes 14–21 days for the same repairs.
- Transparent written quotes. Reputable independent services provide a written diagnosis and itemised quote before any work begins, with parts cost and labour listed separately. No repair begins without your explicit approval.
- Doorstep and courier options. Authorised Microsoft service in India requires you to travel to the service point. Independent specialists offer doorstep diagnostic visits (₹149 in Hyderabad) and courier-in service for customers elsewhere in India.
For liquid damage repairs — which Microsoft’s warranty explicitly excludes — a specialist with ultrasonic cleaning capability and board-level diagnosis skills is the only practical path. See our companion post on Surface Laptop liquid damage repair in India for what to do immediately after a spill.
How to check your Surface warranty status
Before deciding between authorised and independent repair, spend two minutes confirming exactly where you stand on warranty. There are two routes:
- Via your Microsoft account: Go to account.microsoft.com, sign in, select “Devices”, and click on your Surface. The warranty status and expiry date appear on the device details page. This is also where your BitLocker recovery key is stored if BitLocker was enabled.
- Via device serial number: Go to support.microsoft.com/devices and enter your Surface serial number. Find it under Settings › System › About, or on the label under the kickstand on Surface Pro models, or on the underside of Surface Laptop models.
If the warranty is active and the fault is a manufacturing defect, use the authorised route. If the warranty is expired, or the fault is physical or liquid damage (which warranty never covers), independent specialist repair offers better value and faster service.
Couriering your Surface for repair
If you are in a city without a qualified Surface repair specialist nearby, courier-in service is the practical solution. Here is how to do it safely:
- Back up your data first. Connect an external drive or upload to OneDrive. Repair work does not require access to your files, but it is good practice to have a backup before any hardware service.
- Save your BitLocker recovery key before shipping. Retrieve it from account.microsoft.com as described above. Do this before the device leaves your hands.
- Pack correctly. Surface devices have glass fronts and precision-engineered hinges. Place the device in a plastic bag, wrap it in at least 5 cm of bubble wrap on all sides inside a rigid cardboard box. Do not use soft laptop bags for shipping — they offer no impact protection.
- Use a trackable courier. Blue Dart and DTDC are reliable for electronics shipments. Get insurance coverage for the declared value of the device.
- WhatsApp your model and fault description first. Send your Surface model name, a brief description of the fault, and photos of any visible physical damage to +91 77025 03336 before shipping. You will receive a preliminary assessment and a confirmed quote within 24 hours of the device arriving at the service centre.
- Timeline. Most Surface screen and battery repairs are completed and returned in 5–9 working days from receipt, depending on parts availability for your specific model.
