This is a typical scenario, not a real customer. Your Surface Book is out of warranty and something has gone wrong: the screen will not detach cleanly, the battery runs out quickly, or the display misbehaves. Buying a new laptop is expensive, but repair is not guaranteed for every Surface. This post explains what Microsoft states, what an independent diagnosis can and cannot tell you, and a short list of what to compare so you can decide between repair and replacement without pressure.
Is it worth repairing a Surface Book, or should you replace it?
Short answer: ask two questions before deciding. First, what does Microsoft say today about your exact unit? Second, what does a written diagnosis say is wrong and which part is needed? Replace the device only if neither route can repair it, or if the quoted cost no longer makes sense.
What does Microsoft state about out-of-warranty service?
Microsoft's service options page states that availability of out-of-warranty offers varies by product and country or region and is subject to change. The options it lists include customer self repair, Microsoft in-region repair, and authorised service providers.
For India, Microsoft's same-unit repair page lists the models eligible for mail-in repair. It names Surface Pro, Surface Go, Surface Laptop and Surface Laptop Studio models. The Surface Book does not appear in that list. The same pages show Surface Book 3 only in a battery replacement service list, which states it is available except in China, India and MEA. Whether Microsoft's current service covers a Surface Book in India is not stated on those pages, so ask Microsoft or check its page with your serial number. See Microsoft's same-unit repair page and its service options page.
Both pages are written for commercial devices and can change, so treat this as a starting point and confirm for your unit.
What can an independent repair tell you?
Laptop Repair World does not promise that a Surface Book can be repaired. What we can do is diagnose the fault, whether it is the detach mechanism, the display or the battery, and say in a written quotation what is repairable and with which part type. Repair depends on the exact model, the fault and part availability, and is confirmed after diagnosis.
If a repair is possible, the written quotation lists parts, labour, GST and the visit fee before any work. Each part is named as original, compatible or refurbished, with its own warranty. If testing finds another fault, you approve a revised quotation before any further paid work. The repair has a 30-day warranty, subject to terms, and No Fix No Fee means no repair charge if the fault is not fixed. Condition, serial number and accessories are recorded when the laptop is collected.

What should you compare, step by step?
Why do the data and heat details matter?
Microsoft states that when you send a Surface to its service centre everything on it is erased, and that it is not responsible for the loss of data during servicing. It recommends backing up to another computer, drive or cloud storage like OneDrive if you can turn the device on. If your Surface Book will not start, tell every repairer before handover, because data may not be recoverable once a device is wiped.
In India, heat and dust can also play a part. A Surface Book used for long hours in a warm office, with vents clogged by dust, runs hotter, and sustained heat wears batteries. Keep it on a hard surface, away from curtains and bedding. Do not force the screen off the base if it sticks, as a bent latch or torn cable turns a small fault into a larger one.
How the decision plays out
An architect owns an older Surface Book. The battery drains quickly and the screen sometimes fails to release. She checks Microsoft's pages and finds nothing that confirms service for her unit in India. She asks for a written diagnosis, which names the battery as the likely cause and states whether a part can be obtained. She now compares: a written quote for the repair against the price of a new laptop. If the diagnosis said no part was available, replacing would be the sensible step.
When is replacing the better route?
Replace the device if Microsoft cannot service your unit, a written diagnosis says the fault cannot be repaired, or the quoted repair is close to the price of a newer laptop. If you hold a Microsoft protection plan or the device is within warranty, start with Microsoft. Do not pay a deposit to anyone who promises a Surface Book repair before testing it.
When to get help
- The screen will not detach, or detaches without warning.
- The battery drains quickly or the device shuts down suddenly.
- The display flickers or goes blank.
- You want a written diagnosis before deciding to replace.

A note from the LRW Engineer Team
Back up first, if the device starts. Then note the serial number and the exact fault, and compare Microsoft's current answer with a written diagnosis. A calm comparison saves more money than a quick purchase, and a plain statement that something cannot be repaired is a useful answer.
