You may have worked on your Intel MacBook for years: pension statements, family photos, letters, online banking. Now you have read that the newest macOS no longer supports it, and the screen, battery or charging has started to trouble you. This guide explains in plain words what the macOS 27 change means, how to weigh a repair against it, and what to ask your technician, so you can decide calmly and without pressure.
Is it worth repairing an Intel MacBook now that macOS 27 is out?
Short answer: Often yes for a small repair, and less often for a large one. macOS 27 (released 14 September 2026) supports only Apple silicon Macs, and macOS 26 Tahoe is the last version for Intel Macs. Your MacBook keeps working on Tahoe. Spend on a battery, keyboard or charging repair if you are content with the Mac, and think harder before paying for a motherboard repair.
What exactly has changed?
macOS is the operating system, the main program that runs a Mac. Apple's macOS 27 works only on Macs with Apple's own chips (called Apple silicon). A few Intel models, such as the 2019 16-inch MacBook Pro and the 2020 13-inch MacBook Pro with four ports, could run Tahoe but cannot run macOS 27. Tahoe is the last macOS that Intel Macs can install.

How should you weigh each repair?
Battery, keyboard, charging port
These repairs can bring an older MacBook back to comfortable daily use, and they often cost far less than a new Mac. If the rest of the Mac feels fast enough for your work, this is normally a sensible spend. If the MacBook is several years old, ask the technician to look at the keyboard, fans and other parts at the same visit, so that you know the full picture before you approve anything. Screen
A cracked or lined screen is a bigger repair, because the panel is the costliest visible part. The price depends on the model and how the panel is built into the lid. Ask for the exact quote only after the MacBook has been checked, and do not pay in advance.
Motherboard (logic board)
The motherboard is the main circuit board that carries the chip, memory and storage. A board repair is the one to question. If the quote is a large part of what a replacement Mac would cost, it is fair to compare the two before you decide. Do not agree to a board repair until the fault is confirmed and the quote is in writing.
What does a repair cost?
We do not quote a rupee figure in advance, because the cost depends on the model, the fault and the part. The exact quote comes after diagnosis and is shared for your approval before any work begins. What raises or lowers it:
- The model and year. Some parts are easier to source than others.
- The type of fault. A worn battery is simpler than a board fault.
- Part quality. Ask whether the part is new and what warranty it carries.
- Labour. Opening a MacBook needs care, and some jobs take longer than others.
Power cuts, monsoon damp and courier time
Voltage dips and power cuts are hard on any charger and battery, so plug the Mac into a surge-protected socket and use a proper charger. In the humid monsoon months, keep the MacBook away from damp rooms and wipe the vents free of dust. If you live far from a service centre, courier time adds days to a repair, so back up your files first and ask how the parcel is insured.
When to get help
- The MacBook swells at the bottom or the trackpad lifts. Stop using it and switch it off.
- It will not charge, even with a charger you know is good.
- The screen shows lines, patches or stays black.
- It is slow to start, or you worry about the photos and files on it.
