How to pack a MacBook safely for a train or flight journey

LR LRW Engineer Team ~5 min read

Key takeaways

  • Shut the MacBook down before a long journey, put it in a padded sleeve, and carry it in a bag with a flat, firm back so nothing presses on the lid.
  • Keep the MacBook in your cabin bag or on your lap. Coil the charger and cable loosely and keep them clear of the lid, so the plug cannot press a mark into it.
  • These steps help prevent dented lids, cracked screens and stressed hinges, which can come from steady pressure in a crowded bag as well as from a drop.
  • Do not leave a MacBook in a parked car or in sun. Check your airline's current rules before putting any laptop in a checked bag.

A sales manager in KPHB travels by train and flight every other week with a MacBook in a backpack that also holds a charger, a water bottle and files. A cracked screen from a squeezed bag is a worry for anyone who travels for work. This post is for MacBook Air and MacBook Pro owners across India. You will learn a simple packing routine for trains, buses and flights, and which damage each step helps prevent.

How do I pack a MacBook safely for travel?

Short answer: shut the MacBook down, slip it into a padded sleeve, and place it in a bag where nothing presses on the lid. Carry the bag with you rather than putting it in a checked bag or on a luggage rack. Keep the charger and cable separate from the laptop in the bag. This prevents much of the damage that comes from pressure, heat and knocks in transit.

Should I shut down or sleep the MacBook?

For a short walk, sleep is fine. For a journey, shut down. A MacBook that is only asleep can sometimes wake inside a bag, and it can then get warm with no air around it. Shutting down also saves the battery. To shut down, click the Apple menu at the top left and choose Shut Down. The wording can differ slightly between versions.

What should I use to protect it?

  1. A padded sleeve. Pick one that fits snugly. A sleeve that is too loose lets the laptop slide, and one that is too tight squeezes the lid.
  2. A bag with a firm back. The laptop should sit against the back panel, not in the middle of a soft bag that bends when it is full.
  3. Space around the lid. Do not stack books, a lunch box or a water bottle on top of the laptop pocket.
  4. Nothing loose inside the sleeve. A pen, a coin or a charger plug between the lid and the screen can crack the screen when you close the laptop.

How do I handle the charger and cable?

Coil the cable in loose loops, not tight wraps around the adapter. A tight wrap strains the cable near the plug and can break the wire inside. Keep the charger in a separate pocket so the hard plug does not press against the laptop. Do not close the lid on a cable or a charger. Remove any cable from the laptop before you put it in the bag, because a plug that is knocked sideways can damage the port.

Airlines and railways set their own rules for carrying electronics and batteries, and these can change, so check your ticket and the airline's or railway's own page before you travel. At airport security you may be asked to take the laptop out of the bag, so keep it where you can reach it easily.

Heat, monsoon and crowded compartments

Indian journeys bring their own risks. A bag on a bus roof or in a crowded train compartment is squeezed from all sides. A bag left in a car in the afternoon sun can get very hot inside. In the monsoon months, rain and humidity can reach the laptop, so put the sleeve inside a waterproof cover or a plastic pouch. After a damp journey, let the bag dry before you open the laptop. Our post on baggage damage to ultrabooks shows what pressure can do.

What damage does careful packing prevent?

  • Lid dents from weight on the top of the bag.
  • Cracked screens from pressure or a hard object between the lid and screen.
  • Hinge stress from lifting the laptop by one corner of the lid.
  • Port damage from a cable that is knocked while plugged in.
  • Heat build-up from a laptop left awake in a closed bag.

When to get help

Stop using the MacBook and ask a technician if the lid is bent and will not close flat, the screen shows lines or a dark patch, the base is swollen, or a hinge feels stiff or loose. Our MacBook body and lid repair page explains what we repair, and the Apple hub lists our other services. For doorstep service in Hyderabad, including laptop repair in KPHB, see our Secunderabad MacBook service page; elsewhere in India, send it by courier. A note from the LRW Engineer Team

Before each trip, close the lid on an empty desk and look at the keyboard side of the screen for marks. After the trip, do the same. If you find a new mark, you will know the journey caused it and can fix your packing routine before it turns into a crack.
