Step 1: Compression versus drop — which one causes most damage
There is a common assumption that drops cause most airport baggage damage. In our bench experience with Indian domestic flight cases, compression damage from bag stacking causes roughly 60% of screen failures, while drop impacts account for the remaining 40%. This matters because the two damage types require different packing strategies.
When a laptop is in checked luggage, it typically sits under several other bags in a container. Each bag above adds weight — a standard 20kg bag pressing down on a laptop bag creates a force across the contact area. A thin ultrabook with a OLED display (a type of screen that uses organic light-emitting diodes and is thinner but more fragile than traditional IPS LCD panels) is particularly vulnerable because the display panel has almost no structural support between the glass front and the thin chassis behind it. The result on the bench is a screen with a distinctive oval or rectangular fracture pattern — the shape of the item that pressed against it through the bag.
Step 2: Which laptops survive better
Laptops with a magnesium alloy chassis (a lightweight metal used in ThinkPad, Dell Latitude, and HP EliteBook lines) handle compression stress significantly better than machines with plastic or thin aluminium unibody chassis. On the storage side: every airport-damage case we have seen with an NVMe SSD drive had fully intact data. The SSDs are solid-state — no spinning platters, no read head. They handle the vibration and shock of baggage handling without issue. Step 3: The packing failure patterns

The correct packing: a rigid-shell laptop case, surrounded by folded clothing on all six sides, positioned flat in the centre of a hard-shell suitcase. This distributes any compression force across the clothing buffer rather than transmitting it directly to the laptop chassis.
