PST file deleted or corrupted — what are your options?
Short answer: If the PST file was deleted, a file-carving recovery tool can find and restore it within hours as long as you stop writing to that drive immediately. If it is corrupted but still present, Microsoft's built-in SCANPST tool repairs the majority of cases in under 30 minutes. The worst possible response is continuing to use the computer normally while deciding what to do — each new file save risks permanently overwriting the PST's data clusters. How to recover a deleted or corrupt Outlook PST file
Step 1: Check if the file is really gone or just unmounted
Open Outlook. If it shows "Cannot open your default email folders. The file C:\\...\\outlook.pst is not found," the PST is not being referenced — but may still be on disk. Go to File → Account Settings → Account Settings → Data Files tab. The listed path shows where Outlook expects the file. Open File Explorer to that path. If the PST file is visible but has a 0 KB size, it has been corrupted and truncated — proceed to SCANPST. If the file is simply absent from the folder, it has been deleted — proceed to Recuva. Step 2: Corrupted PST — use SCANPST before anything else

Find it at: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\root\Office16\SCANPST.EXE (the Office16 folder name varies by version). Browse to your PST file, run the analysis, then click Repair. Step 3: Deleted PST — use Windows Shadow Copy or Recuva
Before running any third-party tool, check Windows Volume Shadow Copy (VSS). Right-click the folder where the PST lived, select Properties → Previous Versions. If the VSS service was running (it is on by default in Windows 10 and 11), you will see dated snapshots of the folder. The PST file may be recoverable from yesterday's or last week's snapshot at zero cost. If no shadow copies exist, download Recuva (free, by Piriform) on a different machine, copy it to a USB drive, and run it on the affected laptop in deep scan mode targeting the PST file location. Step 4: The India SME context — PST files on shared drives and UPS risks
A pattern specific to Indian small offices: a shared Windows machine with a 2–5 GB PST file on a local drive, no cloud backup, and an intermittent UPS. When the UPS battery drains and a power cut hits mid-Outlook-session, the PST write transaction is incomplete. Outlook opens the next morning to a corrupted file. This is always a SCANPST scenario first — the file is present but structurally broken, not deleted. Run SCANPST in the morning before calling anyone.
