A wedding photographer in Jaipur, aged 34, notices that the MacBook charges only when the cable is held at one angle, and that the external drive holding yesterday's shoot keeps disconnecting. This post is for anyone with a similar problem. It lists the safe checks you can do in ten minutes, explains what a technician does at the bench, and shows which factors move the quote up or down, so that you know what to expect before you ask.
What decides the quote for a MacBook USB-C port repair?
Short answer: The quote depends on how deep the problem is. If the port is only packed with lint, it is a cleaning job. If the port or its small board is worn or bent, a part is replaced. If the connector on the main board is damaged, the work is board-level (done under a microscope on the main board) and costs more. The exact quote comes after diagnosis, because it is hard to know from the outside.
What are the signs of a USB-C port problem?
- The charger works only at one angle, or stops when the cable moves.
- The cable feels loose in the port.
- Charging starts and stops by itself.
- An external drive, monitor or phone connects and then drops.
- A cable that works on another laptop does not work here.

What can I safely check at home?
Step 1: Swap the cable and the port
Try a different cable, ideally one you know works. Then try another USB-C port on the same MacBook. If one port works and another does not, the fault is in that port. Step 2: Test a second charger
Borrow a charger of the right power rating from a friend or office. A worn charger can look like a port fault. Our guide to a laptop plugged in but not charging goes through the other causes.
Step 3: Look for lint
- Switch the MacBook off and unplug everything.
- Shine a torch into the port. Pocket lint packed at the bottom is a frequent cause of a loose-feeling cable.
- Use a wooden or plastic toothpick to lift lint out very gently. Never use metal, and never scrape the small tongue in the middle of the port.
If the cable now clicks in firmly and charging is steady, you may be done.
What does the technician do at the bench?
After a visual check, the technician tests charging and data on each port and measures what the board delivers. Three outcomes are common.
On some MacBooks the USB-C ports sit on a small separate board. On others they are fixed to the main board. This differs by model, and a technician confirms it on yours. Other things that move the quote are the model and year, whether the part has to be sourced, the labour time and whether liquid or physical damage is present as well. - Charging still drops with a known-good cable and charger.
- The MacBook gets hot near the port, or the battery drains fast.
- Liquid has entered the port, or the MacBook has had a fall.
